Basso was cracking several times, each time at a reasonably steep part of the climbs Nibali rode away from him with ease, only to wait time and time again. If it weren't for Basso, I think Nibali would have at least finished within a minute and a half. I think its time for a rethinking at liquigas about the roles. Nibali is a reasonable amount stronger than Basso at this point and it would be a shame for Nibali to forsake his GC aspirations due to the fact that he needs to help Basso

I totally agree. It looked like Nibali kept looking over his shoulder waiting for Basso on the gravel climbs.

I'm disappointed by the fact that I wasn't able to watch this stage on TV, even the text updates from Cyclingews sounded amazing. Delighted to see Pinotti doing so well on a tough stage, one of my favourite riders. I wonder if he could do some decent climbing as well, he has finished the Giro in the top 20 before. Looking forward to tomorrows stage, I hope we'll some fireworks again!

take away the doper and we'd have an exciting GC roster, too bad Vino was just faking it today, he could have taken off and gained an extra minute or two on everyone, such is the power of the juice.

2 Cadel Evans (Aus) BMC Racing Team 0:01:12
3 David Millar (GBr) Garmin - Transitions 0:01:29
4 Vladimir Karpets (Rus) Team Katusha 0:01:30
5 Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 0:01:33
6 Marco Pinotti (Ita) Team HTC - Columbia 0:01:40
7 Linus Gerdemann (Ger) Team Milram 0:01:50
8 Ivan Basso (Ita) Liquigas-Doimo 0:01:51
9 Thomas Rohregger (Aut) Team Milram 0:01:56
10 Richie Porte (Aus) Team Saxo Bank 0:02:00

well you can do one of two things, take away the "doper who has served his ban" in which case remove Vino, Millar, Basso, or remove the doper in which case there is probably nobody left. You decide?

If vino could have won the stage he would have done. .Cadel had more power, so if thats the case logic dictates cadel must be doping too, which a large amount of people seem to think he isnt.

Off to the clinic with you.

edit: ive just been suckered by a troll havnt I. if anyone should know better i should. :/

To be fair, no one should be expected to wait for Wigans.

Of course not. It took the stage 3 crash and stage 4 TTT for people to see where Wigans intentions lay. The jury? He was still being talked as a GT contender. He has repeated several times, before those stages and after that he is at the Giro to train for his main ambition the Tour. So nobody should be expected to wait for him, least of all when his team caused the crash.

But on that note, he was in Pink. All seems fair given how everything has played out amongst the GC boys. Vino is going to need the minute he has on Evans. Cadel really is on fire right now. Sastre is the only major GC contender whose luck needs to change. I thought he could pull back the 2 minutes he was down but he is now 6 minutes back on Vino. Crazy. I could see him pulling 3 back but not 6. If he does go on the attack it will make for more riveting viewing. Hope he has the legs to put up a show of sort because the third week is brutal.

I think Evans needs to ride a clever race from here on out

really? quick, someone get on the phone and tell him. He needs to know about this cutting edge strategy. If only you had shared your wisdom a few years ago, Cadel would have more tours than Lance.

Wow, an internet forum, of all places, is the source of a flash of genius that will change racing as we know it.

Take it easy, ur negative is ur own problem, don’t carry it with u for a public place, a love cycling and I respect all cyclists who suffers everyday to make us happy by watching the epic stages as tomorrows, have some respect for them. U must understand that each of them, gave to cycling much more than u, so make ur conclusions from it, before abuse someone.

Vino deserves respect, as all of them! Who we are to judge them?

+1 on this. Vino definitely wanted the win today - Cadel was just stronger at the finish. Getting tired of the clinic talk every time Vino has a decent showing. Anybody who finished today's stage deserves some damn respect.

Two words sum it up for me today - wow, and ouch! What an awesome stage to watch.

Sastre will need to put in some crazy attacks now if he wants to get up there - should be exciting. Same with Vino and Evans. I don't think we will be seeing much conservative racing. :)

This what makes the Giro so good. They throw crazy *** in like this and it makes it a great viewing and a wonderful race to watch. Each stage you never know whats going to happen. Bravo RCS.

I wonder, this was a fantastic stage to watch, really probably the most exciting race I've seen this year, but will they do this again?

@santacruz: If you are one of those who cant forgive Vino, then create a thread in the Clinic. But you cant disagree that his comeback has been a sucsess. If he is doping now it's not just that, he got talent. And got a attacking style that you rarly see today. People should forgive him, it's been 3 years.

+1

Like a lot of peeps I think Evans is 'clean' but Vino hasn't beaten him mano a mano in this race so far but Vino is dirty...

maybe he's just experienced, fit, and hard as nails - like the WC Cuddles

Anyway, amazing stage. Fantastic racing. Evans was completely outstanding, the most attacking and brave World Champion in my adult lifetime.

EDIT also huge gutsy ride by Nibali - surely Basso should have been towing him?

I half expected Evans to do a bike change for a hardtail mountain bike. Those were some sloppy strade bianche. Sastre is pretty much out of this now, I think. Unless he can put in a massive attack in the high mountains that nobody can follow at all he's not going to make up that time he lost to the other GC contenders. Sad, but that's sport.

Nibali and Basso did well to limit the damage. For some time it looked like Basso might just totally crack and lose huge chunks of time, but he hung on. Funny to see the maglia rosa pacing his own teammate most of the last 20 kms.

It'll be interesting to see how Vino does tomorrow. He's still in good shape, and could try to take advantage of his form before we get too deep into this Giro. I still think he's going to suffer during the climbing in the final week, but he's putting doubts in my mind.

Crazy fact: There are only 19 riders within 5 minutes of the GC lead. The 20th is over 6 minutes back. Shocking this early in a GT.
