So, hardly do they reach the start of the first ascent proper, before Cav, Chicci and Jackson Rod form a small laughing group.
Those boys are really going to struggle.

On the subject of live coverage, Rai Sport 1 kicks everything off and they have been doing all thing Giro, since early this morning.
Gazetta takes their earliest live pictures.
That Steephill link is very useful for anyone who can't get enough of this race!

The gap just went from 4.30 til 3.30 in a few minutes.

Guess the peloton isn't going that slow. Petacchi really seems to have quite a few decent climbing legs. Allthough the peloton seems quite huge still so it doesn't really tell us anything.

rujano. it could be a risk but perhaps worht risking if he sends up some good man first and then jumps to them in climb and gets help until final climb. wouldn't surprise me if peloton took it easy

SOmetimes i wish Cycling news forum members were given days in the DS chair. I mean, we get mocked often for being idiots on the internet who know nothing (even though some members know a lot), but a lot of the wet dreams i read on this board regarding riders trying something rather than not, could actually benefit the riders, and sure as hell help the sponsors get their name out.

I mean something like Tour stage 17 where we all said Andrew should send someone in the break, then attack on the Solour join them and work to the Tourmalet where he tts it. He actually would have shot at winning. Instead, they laugh about sheep, ride hand in hand up the Tourni and Andy has another 2nd place. What did that get you Andy?

Same in all these races. I cant remember the last time I saw someone send a rider up the road then try to work with them to get away in a gt. The Euskatel 3 man ttt was something. And Jens for andy kind of, but it sort of defeated the purpose as he worked for Contador too.

So to conclude, i really really do wish Rujano tried something like this, but ive been disilusioned with all the "wait till the final climb, otherwise its unfair" logic ive been seeing in the peloton. I dont have high hopes, and while Duartes attack in Ruta del Sol was brilliant, the Colombians havent done as much of their "**** the european rules" trick as i hoped. Not in the gts anyway.

That's the gap to the lone chaser (Belkov). The peloton is riding slow.

EDIT: someone just twitted that J Rod retired at KM81. Can anyone confirm? They just corrected. It was Jackson Rodriguez. Sorry

Good to see Jan Bakelants in the breakaway, he's in my manager team. By the looks of it, he could be the strongest climber in the breakaway actually (or perhaps Lastras is stronger).

Ignatas Konovalovas went up the road last year on (I think) the Tourmalet stage, and Carlos Sastre went across to him very early on. I think Caisse d'Epargne putting 3 men in a break on the Madeleine stage to try and get LuLu into the top 10 was a decent attempt as well as the Euskaltel one.

Edit2: J rod out??????:

I agree with you but it's all a matter of risk. Unfortunately a lot of guys would rather finish 2nd - 6th than really have a go at winning it. Which is fair enough - they have contracts to earn.

Your Euskaltel reference reminded me of one of the best Vuelta stages in recent memory was the Heras-Liberty Seguros ambush of Menchov in the Vuelta 05(?), that was a bit special. 3 or 4 Libertys in the breakaway, Heras attacked behind on the penultimate climb and his teammates stopped at the side of the road to wait!! Then TTTed him to the bottom of the last climb where he took the jersey. Menchov had no team around him and lost minutes. Was epic, but unfortunately a rare situation in pro racing.

LOL at the gazzetta commentator geography lecture. He's saying that Etna is the highest volcano in Europe because Mt Teide is highest than Etna but it is geographically in Africa. Does he know in which tectonic plate is Sicily?

Gotta love Vacansoleil's "if we miss the break we'll get some TV time anyway" tactics the last few days, first Hoogerland now Belkov :)

Why do people think it's going slow when Petacchi is in front?

Petacchi did a month full of mountain training with Scarponi

They are hardly going flat out behind either. Just holding the break.
