And this is why you don't "sit" on form waiting for stages. If he had the legs to drop his rivals, Porte should have

No confirmation yet. Sky will say it's a mechanical whether it was or not, so we'll have to await others sources.
Whatever the case, when his team dropped back to pace him they were dropping him again and he had to signal them to slow down.

Yep. Riis said it. 'As Laurent Fignon taught me, never pass up a chance to gain time if you can. Your legs may not be good later.'

Porte already looked bad sunday but i don't know what to conclude from this one. It's flat and very high speed so yea he prob can't handle that.

Unlucky though but that's cycling.

Either something was still wrong with the bike or Porte looked very weak. Strange he could not hold the wheel. I think Mathews came around him to fill the gap and then he was struggling to hold Mathews wheel.

Hopefully this mechanical wont decide the Giro.

Also apparently none of you understand quite how drafting cars work. Porte was fine.

Rolf Sørensen said on Danish TV that many of the teams broke the unwritten rules about that you help people again with the cars, but all the following cars stayed behind like you could see Bernard Eisel was complaning about.

I count 48 seconds for Porte.

46. It's the time for the lead guy in the group, not for Richie
And a gap ahead of Contador may be given

The peloton came in ~15 seconds down, so about half a minute for Porte.

No, Porte came in ~1'04 down. I think the peloton came in 18-19 seconds down.

Hmmmm....can anyone confirm it was a mechanical, or did Richie just crack? I can't seriously believe he was dropped from the peloton.

It has to be a mechanical. I mean, otherwise he is sick big time.

We know how drafting cars works. We also saw people going around Porte easily to close the gap when he couldn't. And we also didn't see Porte taking a single pull when he's supposed to have the biggest engine on the team

I think it is ridiculous that no teammates were around him to give him their bike. It looked like he dropped all the way back to the team car.

Reminds me of Wiggins during the 2013's giro.
