One of my favourite races, this year with a very hard parcours. With Tze Core! And a mountain top finish on Col du Grand St. Bernard!

stage 1: Morillon - Morillon (Les Esserts), 151 km

stage 2: Courmayeur - Pont Saint Martin, 151 km

stage 3: Gressan - Valtournenche, 162 km

stage 4: Pollein - Saint Christophe, 152 km

stage 5: Pre Saint Didier - Colle de Gran San Bernardo, 87 km

I knew about the Grand St. Bernard MTF, but Tze Core is a pleasant surprise, even if it's just before Cervinia and the only other real climb of the stage, Les Fleurs is at the start of the stage, but it's still an awwesome climb.
The route looks very hard and i have to agree, it's an awesome race and a great test for the next generation of climbers.

I <3 this race.

I really wish there would be live coverage for this. Small teams + super mountains + U23s tends to = carnage on the roads. Because of the 2 MTFs people might underestimate the Ramaz stage, also the Col d'Arlaz is no joke and could be a good platform to attack in the Pont-Saint-Martin stage given the small teams.

Cos the riders are starting from Pré St Didier, so they are giving them a shorter stage to make up for the couple of hours it will take to get them out of the amazing thermal spa.

This is a superior race to most small races and most U23 races because it's - for the most part - in the Valle d'Aosta, possibly the most underrated section of mountains available to the Grand Tours. Sure, we get Cervinia sometimes, and PSB (long, rather boring tempo grinder) and GSB (much more like it) are seen once in a while, while the Colle San Carlo has cropped up in the Giro (but 9 years ago now), there are just tons of wonderful climbs that we seldom get to see, and that can be chained together well.

I always enjoy this race, and with the Giro Rosa now over the Italians can be relied on for something worthwhile to follow during week 2 of the Tour as well.

Great field this year and a great course, good to see Power back to his best as he disappointed a little so far this year.

De Plus seems to be the real deal so far. Great climber, but needs to work on his all round capabilities.

Power looks good for the overall. The tt gave him a nice buffer, especially now that Kämna is already gone (I guess today was just too much for him, great talent both tt and climbing wise anyway). Today was a very tough stage so his shape should be good for even the toughest climbs. The biggest challenge will be the consecutive tough stages, De Plus is a good climber and has shown a lot og promise as gc prospect, he will likely hope to tire Power out during the next couple of days.

The Italians ( I know they are not all on the same team) have the numerical advantage currently, maybe they can use it as a weapon tactically. Haig is coming into shape and will likely be a very useful domestique for Power, though.

Great race, this. A pity the Colombians aren't here to defend their victory from last year.

Ye would have been cool 4-72 (now Manzana) is not CT this year so not riding in Europe which is a shame. Would have been nice if Colombia was invited to send a National squad though.

Anyway in my opinion the biggest Colombian prospect who isnt a pro yet will start in the Volta a Portugal do Futuro tomorrow (Jorge Ivan Gomez). He already did some races in Spain as a junior now he will be in Europe for the first time as an U23 with the Caja Rural Amateur squad. Maybe this thread is not the perfect place to post this last bit but imo really interesting to follow!

Because it's a Giro of the Valle d'Aosta. You could only put one flat stage in the region, it would use up every flat road in the region.

I love the Valle d'Aosta.

Was Coppi from Valle d'Aosta? A small monument of him in a roundabout down in the valley. But I guess some of those are all over Italy. Is the climb to the ski resort La Thulie used? I remember it was some nice roads there.

Coppi was from Piemonte.

La Thuile is in and of itself not much of a climb; it's either the first few kilometres of the Italian side of Petit-Saint-Bernard, or a few kilometres of descent after the very difficult (10,5km @ 10%) Colle San Carlo, as used in the 2006 Giro. Said climb is not used in this year's race, though they start a stage at the base of the descent, at Terme Pré-Saint-Didier. They have an MTF at Cervinia, and also at Grand-Saint-Bernard.

My ideal Valle d'Aosta route would probably include a final stage finishing at Courmayeur, with a short punchy climb after the descent from Colle San Carlo, and the queen stage with Col d'Arlaz, Col Tze Core and Col de Joux from Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, then a short descent into Brusson. Lin-Noir is also a very underrated ascent. Torgnon would also be nice simply because it's most of Saint-Pantaléon so could be appended directly onto Tze Core.

The best MTF in the Valle d'Aosta is Pila though.

Pila would be an almost "urban" MTF.. When we are skiing in the area we always stays in Aosta city, and drive by car up to the different resorts. Been driving most of these roads. Should do them by bike sometime..
