Who could be "surprise yellow jersey" in this Tour?
In the 2000s I would rate following riders being at least a bit surprising to get jersey at least for day.

Basically it should not be a contender for overall win, TT specialist when the race starts with time trial, or a top sprinter when time bonuses have been used (in early stages many of them held jersey)

2000: Elli
2001: Wauters, Voigt, Simon
2002: Bertogliati
2003: Nazon, Peña
2004: Voeckler
2005: Voigt
2006: Dessel
2007: Gerdemann
2008: Feillu, Kirchen
2009: Nocentini
2010: Chavanel

should this thread be "sticky" in a desperate attempt to stop new threads appearing constantly on matters that only need redirecting to an existing thread or answering in a post or 2.

Is there any prize money or a souvenir for the first person up the Galibier MTF since it's the highest finish ever in the tour?

I've always wondered what transmisson each team car would be. Surely with all the driving that they do, it would be manuel transmisson?

Tour leader jerseys

How are the Tour de France leader jerseys made?
Like the one they give in the award ceremony. Have they made 22 jerseys, one for each team or do they put on the team sponsors just before the ceremony?
And the one they wear during the race. Do they have some kind of press ready to put the sponsor logos on the jersey overnight? And how many different sizes do they offer the riders?

Hope someone can answer me.
Thnx.

How does the crash inside the last 3km rule work?

What happens if you're say 20 yards detached from the back of a group at 2.5km, they go down and you get delayed by it, without actually having been in the crash.

There must have been plenty of those caught in the 8KM crash that had got close to the lead group again by the 2.5km crash.

Basically, do you have to have been directly involved in a crash inside 3km to get the same time & how far back are you allowed to be?

Team Radios

So what's the deal with the radio ban? I thought they weren't allowed and I see ear buds on almost every rider.

The teams and riders more or less Veto'ed the radio ban. There's a few races where it's still on (the Dutch nationals for one) but in the big races there are still radios.

The radio ban isn't due to come into effect for Grand Tours and Pro Tour events until next year at the earliest.

The sponsor logos are pressed onto the yellow jerseys just before the presentation.

I believe that this year the radios are still used in World Tour events, to be eliminated next year.
They were trying to phase them out, but I don't know if that is still the plan.

In the event that a rider or riders suffer a fall, puncture or mechanical incident in the last 3 kilometres and such an incident is duly recognised, the rider or riders involved are credited with the same finishing time of the rider or riders they were with at the time of the incident. according to letour.com

What it evidently does not compensate is any rider who was not part of that group 3 km out but is nevertheless delayed by the congestion caused by the crash.

Quite how riders who were ahead of the fall are considered to have "suffered", and so do not lose time to those with whom they lose contact later on, is not clear, but that compensation is, we discovered today, extended to them.

The Tour organisers have a huge number of Yellow Jerseys. The one on the podium is for show only, so it doesn't matter if it fits. As someone has said, it has a blank white space on it where the appropriate sponsor's logo is pressed.

For the actual riding jerseys, the rider's size will be known, they will be made up from the stock, and a box full of jerseys will be delivered that night.
