Indeed, the first thought that popped into my head when I saw the last post in this thread had been made by Eshnar was "Eshnar would be a great mod."

Really, I'm overwhelmed

CN gets a lot of free labour, the volunteer mods get a lot of crap for having to toe the party line.
If only you knew...

Except not one time in X years has anyone on staff told me to change my style of moderation. I have a very laisse faire style that some may wish I would be more active with, but any time I "toed the party line" so to speak, was by my own volition, based on common sense.

as it should be Alpe, which allows for colour and variation in the conversations and arguments, some ebb and flow, some repartee, as we are ALL here to express our opinions (well most of us lol)

That's my point. You can have 10 mods with a laissez-faire attitude but if you have one moronic, triggerhappy knuckledragger firing off bans etc like they were going out of fashion then it undoes all the laissez-faire work.

High visability 'look at me' power modding is the 'public face' of modding - as that is what most people see when they read threads and 'oh look mod x has been in deleting stuff again, oh look mod x is coming with the threats again, oh look mod x has been on a ban spree', the low-key stuff which is the better modding isn't seen by most people.

The fact that volunteer mods who have toed/enforced the party line, more heavily than yourself have received flak for their efforts. Which either means the party line is flawed, or the mods were flawed, or both.

There are rules.

Posters who break the rules need to be held to account.

Moderators need to only punish people for what they did wrong, not for things they did not do.

Hi MJM,

That's a pretty angry post. I'm genuinely sorry you see the Moderation of this forum in this way. I've stated elsewhere, I'm a new mod on here and I would like once again to state NOBODY or ANYONE from CN questioned my opinion on anything cycling related when I was (by non CN staff) suggested as a Mod.

I would do it if I am allowed to also ban Mod's for past transgressions and future. There's also a few stipulations which must be met, don't worry they don't include forking over FM stocks or anything like that but there are stipulations to be met, most for the betterment of society well the forum.

No, angry is when I come round and set the CN offices on fire. ;)

I am looking at the career arc of various mods here. It is not an accident IMO that moderators who have been more hardline have burnt out much faster than the less active/laissez faire mods.

Even in arguments in which I have no stake, it seems that some posters are treated more harshly than others especially when the views of those posters do not chime with the more triggerhappy moderators.

I do think that some moderators don't respect posters. It annoys me that some moderators are unwilling to ever hold their hands up and admit mistakes. Case in point LauraLyn - various people were saying she's a troll etc, and some moderators refused to take those claims seriously saying to the effect that the accusations of trolling were only being made because LauraLyn was an Armstrong supporter. Well guess what, it turned out that LL was a troll, and yet did the moderators who doubted the accusations apologise? Nope. When a moderator went off the deepend against posters in the thread about Hamilton's book because the moderator concerned hadn't read the thread properly. Did the moderator hold their hands up? Nope.

Transparency and a little more respect for posters by being honest when mistakes are made. (Credit where credit is due to the mods who do hold their hands up).

(And on the subject of holding up hands, I missed this post before so never responded)

So let's try again. This is a serious request as we need more mods.

I see I have been excoriated for not saying how much influence new mods would have. The same as old mods, of course.

Susan

Which is what? What's the point of being laissez-faire and low key, if all your efforts are undone by someone who is heavy-handed and trigger-happy?

Susan,

I resubmit my original application upthread to become a mod. If it helps, I seriously volunteer my services.

Also, one of my supporters has pm'd me to help with this new request for seriousness. Thanks.

I seriously wish I was more like you.
