thanks for all info in this thread. I go under the knife July 28 for mine and was getting quite depressed about the whole thing. So much training and hard work gone, " Go straight to jail, do not collect $200 ". Really positive to see how quickly some seem to start to recover.

well 24 hours since i had a the repair. Right hand Inguinalir hernia, mesh inserted and walking around the hospital three hours later. I am astounded at how little pain and discomfort i am feeling.Went to the supermarket and did the weeks shopping with no discomfort although it is becoming apparent that carrying any weight seems to hurt a little (bananas were on special so i picked up 4.5 kg of them and noticed it) Doctor advised against any training for four weeks but if i had to i could resume light training after two weeks, but he strongly advised against it. Rushing the recovery won't speed it up one bit. It seems the main need to rest is to reduce the chance of further injury or swelling, other than that i really don't feel too bad.
My repair wasn't huge and this may have something to do with it. Getting this sorted so early on in the life of the hernia may well be the trick. The longer it is left, the bigger the repair needed. My surgery was not key hole surgery, believe it or not key hole was deemed to be more invasive due to the fact that all the equipment needs to be squashed into a small stretched hole verses a simple cut the heals simply.
Anyway I am confident that this will heal quickly with minimal fuss, so if your putting off your operation waiting for the right time, don't it really is no big deal.

Ok so it's seven days since the operation and today I have been back to the surgeon for a check up on the progress. He has given me the OK to resume running, cycling and swimming  didn't think it would be this quick :D. Basically the advice is to listen to my body. Usual practice is to push through the pain, now the deal is to stop when the wound says ' that hurts!' . That's all, I have been told to expect fitness to be less than it was a week ago but other than that if my body says OK then it is, simple. Well i'll see how i go.....

Wow .... what a stroke of luck coming across this thread ..

I have had scans for an unrelated issue and the ultrasound showed a small hernia on my left side ...

Doctor has referred me to a surgeon whom I am seeing this Friday coming.

Am now ****ting myself at the prospect of recovery however from what I can gather its a small tear.

However still not sure of what the surgeon will say yet....

What degree of enthusiasm do the surgeons wanna go in there and fix it .... they do love the old scalpel.

Mmmmmmmmmm ... Not sure now whether its getting worse or now I know its there I am thinking about it which messes with my head :eek:

once it's there it will need doing sooner or later, my experience has been positive. I was apprehensive about the whole thing but my concerns were not founded. I just swam 1km this morning with no pain or discomfort, and that is nine days after the procedure (mesh inserted right inguinal hernia repair). The hernia i had wasn't huge but the repair has gone fantastic, quick and simple. I was operated on at 4pm i ate sandwiches sitting up in bed at 6pm and was walking to the toilet unassisted at 7pm. The next day i went shopping with the family no problem.
I would get it done early, that way the repair isn't a big job and you should be back on the bike after 7 days.

Thanks ..sounds at this stage a bit of ..... sooner rather than later is better ... booked for the Worlds in Geelong so may have to go earlier rather than after ... just in case...

I 'rode' today(day 9 ), more like light spinning but i was on the the bike.If you can get it done you may as well get it over and done with. I had mine done as a public patient at the base hosptial Hamilton(Vic). I was glad that i got in three weeks after seeing the surgeon for the first time, i have a friend in Warrnambool who has been on a waiting list for over 12 months for the same procedure. Not sure of your circumstances, but if you get the chance grab it while it's there.

Never know who's been on it and whats been hidden in the seat tube ..... wondered why the sniffer dogs looked at me funny when we rode past the airport before the twitter ride !!

Well, went to the specialist and must say was dissappointed with outcome.

Basically was told to not worry until it gets worse!

WTF

Thought that was the idea about going to a specialist.

Now im confused ....

2nd opinion or not ??

:confused::confused:

I was told it will need doing sooner or later, no time frame exactly.I asked if I should stop training or going to the gym and the doctors remarks were, no just keep going until it needs to be done. Maybe you could hit the weights to speed things up a bit :D

Hi all.
Apols for resurrecting a long-dead thread, but I have just finished my recovery from an Umbilical Hernia Repair Op with Mesh and knowing that people tend to post scary negative stories about these procedures more than they post success / plain-sailing stories, I wanted to come back and drop my message of encouragement to anyone who is researching for how the op is going to impact their cycling…

Before my op I got a mixture of scared and confused by the info from cyclists that is available, so here’s my contribution for others who are going through the same experience.
Hope it helps someone.

I wrote a series of blog posts about my recovery period, which you can find below, but the summary is:

Firstly about me:
I am a lean 35 year old male who eats very healthily, doesn’t smoke or drink much alcohol
I race at a decent but low amateur level in the UK in TT, Crit, RoadRace & Track disciplines
Secondly, after the op:
I was taking mile-long walks on day two after the op
Very gentle turbo spinning started in week 2
Ramped up turbo intensity through weeks 3 and 4 but never to anything maximal
First committed outdoor rides started in week 5
Signed off by the Surgeon & Racing successfully by week 6

Here’s the link to the group of blog posts I made on the subject.
http://www.formofexpression.com/#!blog/adqiy/tag/umbilical-hernia-repair

I hope it helps you, and though I don’t intend to come back to this page again, I want to say: 'good luck’!
Feel free to come ask me specific questions about my experience over on the site if you want my view; I know it can be anxiety-inducing when you are waiting to have this op.
