He was already the best rider of his generation, and now he’s ready to become the best coach. Valverde is the new coach of the Spanish national team.

Jesus Christ. We need to stop this endogamic malarkey where riders with no particular tactical nous immediately become DS's and coaches because it's seen as some sort of homage to their careers and as a cozy retirement rather than as a super important job that requires specific talents - and a job he has zero experience for, incidentally

How can you put the guy who co-signed Rui Costa's WC victory in charge of the national team

And on a frickin' FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT, no less. Ugh

Yes, the guy who was on the podium seven times at the WCRR clearly has no idea what' going on there.

What is the national coach role? Keep an eye on how riders are progressing, make two selections a year (three every 4th year), act as DS for 2 (or 3) days a year. Anything else?

Is it the sinecure I am assuming?
To do the job properly it's about building a team that wants to take part and importantly ride for the designated team leader and each other.
To manage and hopefully sucessfully resolve the likely 'domestic squabbles' along the way.
