Look at the recent history of the Herald Sun Tour and it's been won BY GT champions in Wiggins, Froome and Hindley.

The Nationals will never change from January as it fit into the summer of cycling - I hear there is a chance that Bling may target the Nationals.
Yes but the race is a shadow of what it was. Years ago it was over a week long. Not questioning the quality of the riders just the route and duration. I think they had a race called the Tour of Gippsland as well which was a good race. First time I saw Cadel Evans was when he won the Mt Wellington stage of the Tour of Tasmania. He just rode away from the field, he was only a kid, very early in his road career. Australia has lost a ton of quality road races over the years even the Goulburn to Sydney is nothing like it used to be. At least the Warnambool to Melbourne survived and I think the Grafton to Inverell is still going.

The Tour of Gippsland is still a thing.

The 2004 race was conducted from 14 to 24 October 2004 and involved 85 cyclists in seventeen teams of five. Thirteen stages were completed with a total distance of 1110.7 km, 119 intermediate sprints and 37 hill climbs, including the two category one climbs of Mount Baw Baw and in the Otway Ranges. Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad won the General classification in the time of 26 h 39 min 55 s. Karl Menzies won the sprint classification and Phillip Thuaux won the Mountains classification.

Obviously the format of the race has changed a lot re Sun Tour.

Go back to the 1980's and 1990's it used to be around a 10 to 12 day with some double stages - So you could have a race with around 15 stages which could include 5 ITT's - Most of the stage races you mentioned in another thread are still going as part of the NRS.

The Sun Tour has had upwards of 18 stages in the past.

2023 TDU Parcours announced

AusCycling | Time trial, Mt Lofty, but a surprise absence: 2023 Tour Down Under route

A time trial, and no Old Willunga Hill finish.
An ITT will make it a lot more expensive for the trade teams to attend.
Regarding Mt. Lofty: the late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott was in a band of bohemians called the Mt. Lofty Rangers with Peter Head. Head's wife is a skilled seamstress who has made award winning costumes for stars of the screen and stage including the late rock and roll legend Chrissy Amphlett of the Divinyls (I Touch Myself) whose birthday is today.

Looks like a hot field at the TDU - Thomas,S.Yates, most of the Aussie big hitters including Ewan, Matthews, Hindley, O'Connor, Vine, Dennis etc - GC will be an interesting battle with the inclusion of a prologue and Mt Lofty - I have no idea who will win.

Day 1 of the Bay Crits.

RRG easily wins the womens race and, in the men's race, Blake Quick leads out Brenton Jones, in Jones last hurrah before hanging them up, Jones gets the job done. Plapp doing huge turns on the front of the pack, and had a good work-out.

Day 2 tomorrow, same course raced in the opposite direction.

Hey, @Potomac, you still want that list of Aussies on WorldTeams not on the startlist?

My original post was a bit tongue in cheek.
Yes, it would be interesting to see a list of the heartbroken.
However, it is quite a bit of work that I'm too lazy to do myself.
Thanks in advance if you want to tackle it.

I'm sure it'll be easier listing Aussie WT riders not riding TDU, than it'll be listing French WT riders not riding TdF.
