I don't think Wiggins can do 55km. Not even at altitude. 54 low yeah.

But for 55km+ he'd need an illegal bike

IMO Wigo will be 5% faster than Dennis

52.491 + 5% = 55.11555

Therefor my prediction for Wigo is 55.1 Km

I'm accepting avatar bets for those guessing UNDER 55.1km :D

What are the terms. My national pride has me really not liking that prediction.

I'll back my boy Rohan to hold it to a max of 4% (With a secret hope that Wiggins doesn't break it)

So I'll say a max of 54.6 km for Wiggo.

As for terms are you saying that over 55.1 I'll take a Wiggins avatar (or whatever else you think is relevant) and under 55.1 you'll change your avatar?

Game on, if I win, you will have to use avatar of my choice for 30 days. If I lose, I will have to use avatar of your choice for 30 days :D

Gustav Larsson will attempt to break the hour record next Sunday in Manchester (March 15). This was reported by the Danish commentators during yesterday's Paris-Nice transmission. I have no other sources of this except a brief newsarticle @ feltet.dk.

He won silver at the 2008 Olympics and at the 2009 Worlds, but I can't imagine him getting near Rohan Dennis' current mark at this point of his career?

I think he'll do a Bobridge like attempt. 51,4

Maybe not. But then again, we don't know how he's preparations have been. I mean it's not like Dekker is at the top of his career either and Larsson should certainly have the engine do give it a decent try.

But seems a bit strange they do not announcent before now, if he actually have been preparing well over the winter. Would have given some publicity at least, so maybe it means this is not a super well prepared attempt after all..

Great surprise! ….those Swedes ARE stubborn and Gustav really knows how to 'stop a clock'. Think we are going to see a 52+ effort, Godspeed.

UCI needs to drop the Pro Tour passport proviso and let racers WITHOUT a doctor/pharmacist attack the mark, i.e. stop catering to the sullied system.
Matt Botrill et al just have to sit and watch ???

Yo Marco,

You probably DO understand why Fignon, Hinault, Lemond and others did not make their attempt--------------$$$

Larsson had nothing to lose, got a personal best, CULT advertising and set a Swedish standard. Kinda reminds me of Gregor Braun or Mogens Frey………..those were the days

Yeah probably I do, and propably You do understand, what I was referring to, YO?

They got almost no attention at all. And how should they have gotten any, making the announcement only a few days before and sheduling the attempt simultaneously to Paris Nice and Tirreno?

Swedish record? Come on he got eaten alive by Voight!

The whole thing with this timing hardly made sense.

Outside of Nordic skiing, who's the last Swede to get busted? Larsson likely didn't have to buy his way around the whiz quiz. He IS the greatest thing since M.Lafis, though J.Karlsson could do a krono. The Pettersson Bros gotta be lovin' this mini-spotlight on Sweden. This 'poor result' still makes the top 50 Hour records of all time. What IS the Swedish record?

Thx Gustav, that's way over 31mph. The bulk of us couldn't hold that pace for 5 minutes, especially w turn scrub, travel hit, no track experience and the condition of that track. I can see why others resurface the lane, makes Storey's mark look better too, no? Remember, Moser's clear linoleum is still a sacred relic coveted by the Mexicans who removed it after his events…….

Hey Marco,

Swedish record was 45.335km. Only 1 track in Sweden, 190 meters.
Nice record smash & obviously, the rest of us got it nice, i have a track only 600km from my house, 333m.
How close are you to a track?

Top 50 of all time? are you serious? Do you realize all the other guys prior to the rule changes were NOT riding aero setup bikes?

So far, with no disrespect, Larsson is the worst of the new bunch and even 43 year old Jensie got better result.

If he was riding "traditional" bike, he would be happy to crack 45km. His attempt was pure joke and I'm still not even sure why he decided to do it as it was obvious that he will embarrass himself and there was nothing to gain for him from this attempt.

Top 50 Hour attempts include Boardman's superman, Obree, Ekimov with cowhorns from the crown, Indurain on the sword, top amateurs on funny bikes,Big rear wheel bikes and don't forget Moser at 50+yrs going 51.8km a la Obree.

Athletic ability aside, all it took was a UCI permit/officials/testing and swagger to give it a go.
Now the bike has to fit into a 'smaller box' and if you are a male, be a member of the UCI 'boys club'.

So you think Wiggo can go similar distance to Rominger in the EPO era and with full aero bike set-up? Wiggo is good but not that good. Marginal gains can get you only so far. What has Wiggo's advantage over Dennis been in normal ITTs? 5% seems way to high to me? My prediction is 53.5km / +2%.

That's a glass half full way to look at it. Another way would be missing by nearly 5% to the current record was a spectacular failure. It's one of the bigger misses other than an abandonment.

I would say that 2% is about right for a road time trial, however wiggins track experience has to be worth an extra bit for the hour, not 5% thought.

But Dennis is also a track world champion and olympic medalist.
