TourOfSardinia said:The coach said he hadn't over trained - and last week he stopped after 45 mins.
So I guess there's gotta be a doubt about the final 15 mins
Because no one would get near it, and the whole point of the rules rewrite was to get high profile names having a go and breaking it.Wiesmier said:Great ride by this chap. Forgive me but why is Boardman's 56km record not valid now since that was also down within the current pursuit regs at the time.
Waterloo Sunrise said:All feels a bit devalued and pointless for b-teamers to use the change in rules to set 'records' that are not comparable to anything previous, and everyone knows are not a real benchmark whilst we wait for a credible rider to have a go.

It just like a long term ITT the early starter have the moments of glory until the big boys come along later in the order - all good fun!Waterloo Sunrise said:Yes. My point is that the Voigt and Brandle efforts look like pointless glory hunting, taking advantage of the new rules and lack of a real record rather than serious hour records.
Once Wiggins or a similarly statured rider sets a time we'll have a real record.

Libertine Seguros said:And can you blame them for doing it? The whole point of the change in rules was to try and get bigger names interested in doing it. It had been years since we'd had a serious attempt at it, only speculation. It's not like Sosenka was a true A-lister either, mind. Brändle saw an opportunity that may never come again to put his name up there. Matthias isn't one of the world's elite time trial talents, but he's a pretty useful TTer. You could argue, and probably have a case, that quite a lot of road TT specialists are better time triallists than Brändle and could have broken Voigt's record themselves. But they didn't go "you know what, I'm going to try for this while I have the chance, before Wiggins or Martin or whoever have a go". He did. His reign could well be short-lived, but it's a reign nonetheless. It's like picking up the yellow jersey early in the race. The GC men will probably take it off you later, but you'll fight for the prestige of having it even if only for a day.
