The last 1H threat we had was all about Jensie. Time to start an official thread dedicated to 1 hour record as new attempts are around the corner.

On Thursday, October 30, 2014, at 7 in the evening, Matthias Brändle will get into the saddle on the track at the World Cycling Center (CMC) in Aigle, the headquarters of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
His sole objective will be to improve upon the current world UCI Hour Record time of 51.110 kilometers.

I thought that was the entire point of the Hour Record; to improve on the current record.

I think what he means is that he is just trying to beat it, but others try to get a specific distance ahead of the old one, e.g. Bobby gets the record at 40.009m but Donny wants to beat it in by 4metres to get 44.009m.

To be clear: this bike falls in the Voigt category, but neither in the Mercx one, nor the Moser/Superman Boardman one, right?

The current hour record bikes rules are (we think) aligned with current pursuit bike rules.

I say "think" as the UCI never actually validated their statement - they just said bike was to conform with those used in "track endurance" events, and given the precedent set with Voigt's ride, well there you go.

They never specified which track endurance bike rules they meant (there are two different sets of track endurance bike rules, those for mass start racing, and those for the individual and team pursuit). You can of course use a mass start bike in the pursuit, but not the other way round.

This also brings it into line with the bike rules used for masters age category hour records.

Perhaps, but Cookson's / UCI's decision to prevent anyone not on the bio-passport from making an attempt effectively means it's now a professional road racing event which happens to use a track.

Even many track specialists couldn't have a go because a lot of them are not on the passport.

It's the only world record that requires a bio-passport. The rule doesn't exist of course, UCI just made it up.

I would think he will beat the current record by 1km, early 52's is my prediction.

Late 51s for me. I don't have that much knowledge of Brandle though.

The event is proving its marketability, imo. Already second attempt in two months live broadcasted. Although I've expected some larger manufacturer and stronger name to follow Trek's lead, a domestic Swiss company makes sense, too.
The worm-up will be very important for Brandle's effort, I think. Older and more experience riders like Voigt handle high pacing during long distance easier.

The coach said he hadn't over trained - and last week he stopped after 45 mins.
So I guess there's gotta be a doubt about the final 15 mins

I'm going to have to turn it off - I can't stand it. And the youtube comments seem to show general annoyance with it too. Hopefully someone there notices and breaks it.
