Nibali was the strongest last year lol, you don't win after a 17 km solo otherwise. A shame he isn't here because of that crash in the Olympics, would have been top favorite otherwise.

Nibali for sure wasn't the strongest climber last year. Moreno was able to ride San Fermo 20 seconds stronger then him last year.

He was the best rider. Or the most daring. But not the strongest. Would have lost without that monster descent.

Moreno rode it so fast partly because he did nothing beforehand.

Sure, but Nibali was also not able to drop his rivals on Civilgio. He was good, but not in monster shape.

I wouldn't be too mad at Astana. They can only go on who has been stronger recently and then who felt stronger. I think the blame is more on Aru, really.

Ever tried to go hard in a descent when you're tired or don't have good legs? People often think descending doesn't cost energy, but it does. If you're in crap shape it doesn't matter how good of a descender you are, you'll be dropped. Moreno did nothing before that climb, Nibali did.
