Outside bets for Sunday:

Scarponi - Lampre-Merida
Bardet - AG2R
Elminger - IAM Cycling
Voeckler - Europcar
Henao -Sky

Not sure I would put Scraponi and Henao down as outside bets. I think they have as much chance as say Nibali.

edit:lol, spelling mistake, but will let it pass.

Cycling has 3 grand tours, 5 monuments and 1 world championship (2 but forget the tt for a moment).

When was the last time an entire season played out without a Spanish cyclist winning at least one?

I have it at 1997 (counting Heras as the winner of the 05 Vuelta as he will get that back/ has already got it back)

I know what you are thinking, but Freire won MSR that year;) The other year he did the worlds so he saved them twice.

Ironically last year was the first year the other major superpower of cycling- Italy went a year without winning a major event in a long time. Their run went back to 1989 though, and before that, christ, maybe for ever.

The third wheel Belgium, a little worse, 2007 and will do it again this year unless Gilbert can save them tomorrow.

The 4th biggest nation in cycling, well their record goes back to 1997 like Spain. Only its the other way around:p

I think the most expected event is a fierce battle of victory between Rodriguez and Valverde, some emotions involved.

Nibali and Gilbert for podium.

Sagan, Ulissi, Moreno and Contador also having their chances.

Everything else is an outside bet.

Doubt Ulissi will make it, he will have to work for Scarponi. Likewise with Moreno, who will work for J-Rod. I have doubts about Gilbert's form. If he couldn't hang on at the worlds in **** weather, why should he be able to now?

Contador is a solid bet imo.

We shouldn't forget about Uran.

Has France really not won any of those since 1997? Damn (rhetorical)

Valverde will not win it. The peloton will shame him for his sneaky Valverdeness. He will slink away with his tail between his legs thankful the season is over.

My outside bet (after Nibbles and Murito): IVAN ****IN BASSO

Anybody knows Cannondale roster for this?

As for Ulissi: WC told us he's not yet a rider for 270km in bad weather. He might be in the future, although his bike handling skills are far from adequate.

Edit: ok it's 240km not 270. Still I think it's too hard for him.

I have a feeling Uran won't screw up this time and take the victory.

For Purito it's the one race too much for the year I think.

What a start list, everyone will be there, really hope something will happen before Villa Vergano but i'm quite pessimistic about that.

In an interview with Gazzetta Basso said yesterday that he is in great shape and he thinks he can be a contender.

Depends how he recovered from his injuries at the worlds.

Froome won't be racing tomorrow.
Just like last year Sky are pulling out riders in the last second towards the end of the season. They're obliged to send a full team but are clearly avoiding it on purpose...I bet Froome is already on holiday and has never planned to start here.

Not really. The minimum number of riders that must take the start in order for the team to race is 5 I believe.

It's 12 degrees today in Milano. Likely to be very cold on top of Valcava and Sormano tomorrow.
