I'm not sure whether this attitude of yours is solely towards Bonds or encompasses the LA debacle...

Either way, it's not about whether some guy lied. It's where the money and drugs came from. And where those drugs and money went. Your PR spin to end either investigation is well taken.

As was the bait. Apparently I'm a sucker for some kinds of troll bait. Congrats...

Well, since you come from Canada, do not work or pay taxes here, and I ausume are not a baseball fan why would you care if they spent a billion zillion dollars going after Barry?
The thing is it is obvious that Barry juiced. It is obvious he lied. Now he will probably die a horrible death.
To me the only good thing is it will make Novizkys carreer. On my tax dollar.
Big wow, hey I didn't need that money anyway to send my kids to college.

Oh, Flickie;

Where has the 'rainbow and unicorn' philosophy gone? I'm missing your unadulterated love, and your humour which I enjoyed.

I actually have worked in the States extensively, and have been forced to pay into your government's tax scheme. No winner for you there. I didn't even **** about it...

As to Bonds: I don't really care about his case. I couldn't even pick him out of a lineup. I especially don't care about baseball - my contention is that it was invented so cricket wouldn't hold the title of 'Most Boring Game On The Planet'.

My argument was against parochial Americans who think there is some immediate parallel between MLB and something going on involving a whole lot more countries and is presenting an international interest in the case - more importantly on a legal level.

I don't care if Bonds' case costs 'a million zillion dollars'. I don't care if it costs five bucks. I understand you love Conte, but these are vastly different cases.

Bring on the love and unicorn farms! The world is such a brighter place when you aren't being cranky. I look forward to your response, but give me a bit of time to get back to you - I'm jumping into the shower. A rainbow shower! I'll be back in twenty minutes, or so...

For those looking for clues from the Barry Bonds trial, there was this update today:

Bonds' messages to ex-mistress released

Apparently this is part of a characterization of the accused:

Dave.

The feds making these transcripts public on the eve of the trial, just as jury selection is about to begin, is a bit pathetic.

Similiar to launching negative campaign ads on the eve of an election that is not going your way. Looks a bit desparate. Minor league, rinky dink.

Conte is a scumbag, I think pretty much all here would agree. I just bring up his name because he has been synanamous with organized doping, and he has revealed his doping schemes and US cover-ups. It is also obvious his ploy is to embarass Novizky, the FEDs and the USOC.
As far as Bonds goes, he was in competition with individuals like Conseco, McGuire, Sosa, etc. Why haven't those guys gone to the GJ?
Anyhow I still stand that the unethical sports conduct of Bonds has been punished. I live close to San Francisco, and he is nobody's hero anymore.
If a precidence is to be set in Bonds perjuring himself the law is the law.

Also thanks for upholding the belief that the USA is the shining example of good in going after the bad guys. If only more of you existed the world would be at peace and there would be peace, democracy and a thriving economy and jobs for all in the middle east.

Being serious though I like your perspective that the International sports authorities are watching the Bonds case. Living in provincial California I never thought that Bonds was on the world radar.

If Novizky likes being Capt. Ahab going after the white whales and harpoons a couple oh well I hope the Nimrod doesn't sink.... Just saying...

As I don't follow American sports, I'm not sure how he's done the above. I'd love a link to see him thumbing his nose at the various Fed parties.

As to me 'upholding the belief'... Okay... Right now I'm politely smiling and nodding, upholding the belief that that'll help you go away.

That is truly an astounding library! Haven't been able to go through all of it yet, but I will.

I'll enjoy it while sitting on my gigantic marshmallow of pleasure and eating the snacks of lazer-focused perfection. I might just stab myself with 'needles of exculpation' while imagining leaping unicorns and glistening rainbows... Have to work on the pain threshold and all...

This is the guy who chose prison over ratting out Barry Bonds. Fat chance using him as a witness against Barry Bonds.

As I've said, I actually have no idea who Bonds is (apart from an American baseball player). Apparently Conte's got some big balls - or a promise of increased financial security through keeping his mouth shut... Either way, it looks like he wins.

Back to my marshmallow...

I don't think Conte is the man doing time for Bonds, that man is Greg Anderson his personal trainer.. A good book on the whole Bonds affair is 'Game Of Shadows' , it really exposes how endemic peds were in baseball and busts the myth that cycling/athletics are the only sports in which peds are abused...

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...nes-to-look-for-as-bonds-perjury-trial-begins

The government is looking to make an example out of Bonds, as this case will likely have implications for Roger Clemens and Lance Armstrong, who will have their own day in court sooner rather than later. This could be very big in determining both of their futures.

Jeff Novitsky: The top man in BALCO. He will undoubtedly try to make a spectacle out of this entire ordeal and accuse the government of singling out Bonds the entire time. If nothing else, he will be entertaining.

didn't know Jeff had the reputation of being an entertainer.

Aside from all of the aforementioned characters, many former and one at least one current player could be called to testify. Amongst them, look to hear the names of Jason and Jeremy Giambi, Benito Santiago, Marvin Benard, Armando Rios and Randy Velarde.
The above
from the article.

What these men say will have something to do with other PED use trials. Jason,Jeremy and Benito are likely steroid abusers themselves. Depending on how the trial goes their testimony could incriminate Bonds.
Perjury is what they want to nail Bonds on right?
The mistress is a red herring, Bonds' attorneys will shred her testimony and that will be a laff.
If these others MLB players incriminate Bonds it could be bad for Bonds.
I love these kind of legal battles.

Jeff Novitsky: The top man in BALCO. He will undoubtedly try to make a spectacle out of this entire ordeal and accuse the government of singling out Bonds the entire time. If nothing else, he will be entertaining.

1. What do they mean "top man in BALCO"? Lead investigator?

2. How will he "undoubtably try to make a spectacle out of this entire ordeal"? I'm going to guess, since this is a perjury case, that Novitsky may not even be called. I've never heard anyone suggest that the proof of perjury was some some comment made known to Novitsky. Unless Bonds admitted to Jeff that he knew what the clear and the cream were, then lied to the GJ, then Novitsky adds nothing to the prosecution.

At any rate, what motivation would Novitsky have to torpedo a trial that, in part, stems from an investigation he worked so hard on?

3. Exactly how does Novitsky, a government employee, "accuse" the government of anything? "Accuse' sugests, first and foremost, an adversarial relationship. Why would he even want to "suggest" it when so many others were charged, when his investigation was of BALCO, and the only reason Bonds is standing trial is because he allegedly lied (no lies, no trial).

Guess I'm missing something.

Barry Bonds perjury trial begins

Barry Bonds perjury trial begins

Among the jurors there was no shortage of opinion on baseball's Steroids Era or drugs in sports

...

A short distance away at the prosecution table, his back to Bonds, was Jeff Novitzky, the federal agent who has pursued athletes over drug allegations for eight years with dogged intensity. Bonds is the biggest star to face trial because of his efforts.

...

Illston estimated the trial will take about four weeks.

Sounds like there were many fanboys and girls in the prospective pool, as well as those with an outright opinion against the Feds investigating doping in sport:

Juror No. 69 was angered Congress investigated steroids in sports ''on my dime.''

I as a Giant fan, was turned off by Bonds, as soon as he started getting the steroid induced injuries. I do not know to many Giants fans who are fanboys of him, as Bonds ruined his health with steroids. + Many of us monogamous individuals kinda soured on Barry with his numerous affairs.
He cuddled up to Willie Mays, one of the epic baseball stars of all time and then chose to be bad, bad,+bad.

Perhaps the worst thing that could happen for Armstrong would be for Bonds to go free.

This would fool Wonderboy into thinking he could do the same....ignoring that the two cases are completely different. He would then be stupid enough to go to trial, after years of legal maneuvering, wasting millions of dollars and ultimately spending a long time in prison.

I listened to npr's report on this case today while I was on the road. I was surprised at the lack of mention about LA's investigation with the amount of time they spent talking about JN's investigation of PED's. They sure did make it sound like they were really having a hard time picking an impartial jury. LA's lawyers will undoubtedly play the wasted millions card when his turn comes about.

Jeff is all about EGO, trying to build a name for himself, he is in it for the money, same as LeMond,/Bonds/ Armstrong. LeMond/Bonds/Armstrong did it in their respective sports, now Novitzky does it in lawyering. It is all good and it is funny, Victor Conte sees through all those guys, and has a little chuckle at their expense. If we could only bring Eddie B. and Jackie Sims on in it would be really cuddely.

Looks like a stacked jury.

Parrella continued by asking if potential jurors are so bothered by the steroid scandal that they could not serve. One potential juror replied that he could be fair, but told the prosecutor: "My opinion about steroids is that it's like cheatin'. To me, that's not right."
Finally, while most of the potential jurors said they did not believe prosecutors had "singled out" Bonds with criminal charges, one man disagreed. "I very much think he was singled out because of his race," he said, noting that other baseball players implicated in steroids use have not faced criminal proceedings.

9 women jurors, 5 men jurors, one african american. Doesn't look fair to me, and jurors are saying Barry was singled out on the steroid issue because of race.

I cannot imagine the Feds would look forward to picking an impartial jury in a USGov vs Lance case. A lot more Lance fans than Barry fans.

One reason why the LA trial may not happen for a while. There will be lot more anti Lance stuff come out first to help people see what a charade he is.
Like Flicker said about Bonds, liked him till all the stuff was exposed.

But the evidence against Lance is much stronger than that on Bonds I believe.

"Jeff Novitsky: The top man in BALCO...."

I have read...and re-read this para several times.

Am confused. In fact, I now express Bulk confusion. My guess is someone (with very limited knowledge of the case) did a cut and paste and made a complete hash of it.

Anyway back on topic...expert (is it?) analysis indicates that if he doesn't testify, jail time may not be on the agenda for Mr B. Also very happily for Mr B...seems Anderson is a very loyal friend!

None the less, intriguing times ahead. No doubt LA and others will be interested onlookers (me an impartial spectator).

This is gold. Judge asks to have one juror dismissed because he is"huge Giants fan" and the guy answered on his survey that he thought this was huge waste of money.

Be that as it may, a perjury charge relies upon proof that Bonds knowingly lied to the grand jury when he stated that, among other things, he did not know that "the cream" and "the clear" were steroids.

While Jeff Novitzky may have evidence that Bonds knew what the stuff was, he doesn't have firsthand knowledge as he wasn't there. He may have come to know this through interviews with other witnesses, but it remains anecdotal and heresay (none of the interviews conducted by Novitsky would have been under any sort of oath).

Ultimately, witnesses will have to be produced who have firsthand knowledge of what Bonds knew and when he knew it. THOSE will be the key witnesses without whom the case could not go forward, not Novitzky.

P.S., if Notvitzky is in it for the money, where is that money coming from and why is he still laboring away as an investigator for the FDA. Bonds testified over six years ago. Jeff must be on a very slow plan. Oh yeah, and for about the 1,000th time, Novitsky is not a lawyer.
