Is Robert Gesink soft?

Yeah, think the time was just too short to fully get back into shape after he broke his collarbone.

edit: Dagblad de Limburger (the website version of it), reports Gesink's dad was transported via trauma helicopter yesterday, and Frans Maassen described the situation as "very severe".

:(

Wow. That's really, really horrible for Gesink.

Nope, what I said was, whom is the best GT rider in the world.

you really don't get what i'm saying, like the youngest pointed out, I'm merely explaining that many guys, like gesink merely priortise the tour, and it would be ignorant to ignore why.

No, sorry, you specifically said that "this year", Nibali had a 1st and a 3rd - therefore, it *is* actually a 2-sided quesiton like I said. Either the question is "who is the best GT rider" in which case thie years results are *irrelevant* and you shouldn't have put them there as part of the question, or the question is asking if you look at this years results, who is the best *this year* - in which case he is (especially as Contador may even be eliminated from the TDF, and therefore we should eliminate him from the consideration)

I understand that you meant the first, I was merely pointing out that, by including this years results, the question could be read 2 ways, 1 way of which Nibali is clearly the best.
And maybe, instead of understanding that after LA the TDF is idolised, maybe you should be critical of those riders that do this, as this feeds the same attitude in the public?

What you guys don't seem to get is that I'm not talking from my own perspective, I'm just explaining why I think Gesink wants to ride the Tour first and foremost. I like the Giro as much as the next guy, idem for the Vuelta, but during this year's Tour Gesink said that he'd never seen such a high level of racing, and being the ambitious guy he is, he'll want to prove he can be among the best at that high level.

Where Nibali comes into the equation, no idea. You must have me confused with Dekker T.

I would also guess that he wants to win a white jersey at the tour and this will be his last year to do so.

Actually... After looking it up on the Wiki, Schleck the Younger may still be eligible. Apparantly the cut-off date is not the birth date. If a rider is 25 years old or less on January 1st, he shall be eligible for the white jersey at the Tour that year.... Which means Schleck would still be eligible, since he's 25 now and doesn't turn 26 until next June.

That can't be right, right?

Hmm according to Wikipedia what you say is correct, but I could have sworn that multiple news sources, including CN and the horrible US tour commentators both said it was his last year to win the white jersey...

It was indeed his last year (andy). Wikipedia is a great source, but not always correct.

Anyway, I still have 1 shot at the white jersey myself. But I'll most probably go into the history books as first rider who finishes outside the time limit in a prologue

Looks like you'll be spared since there will be no prologue this year... just a road stage. :D

I don't know where you got that story but I never said that. You must have mixed me up with someone
I got into cycling in 1993 when my dad took me to a 3rd cat. col in the Tour and watch. I'm certain I have told that stories at least 3 times before. Your memory is failing. Better check for alzheimer ;)

As i recall he said something about seeing a race and loving it since, kind of like all of us.

But 24. Thats got to be youngest Acting Boss in history.

At least you got the part about seeing a race and loving it since right ;) you just mixed up the years! 1993, not end 80-ties, I was just being born at that time.
I'm actually exactly 2 months older than Robert Gesink. I'm from March 31 where is he from May 31

The 80's ended in 1994. i was right;)

Im just surprised to see young cycling fans on this forum. I thought everyone was 40+. (I am in the former too).

ps. Dekker, how did you learn to speak English so well. Moondance said he learnt it English school in Switzerland ( i think, dont terrorise me if i got this wrong ;)) and im assuming not every dutchie learns it this way.

I actually share my birthday with Gesink. Not the same year, though.

Oh, and Hitch, where did you get the impression that everyone is so darn old on this forum? ;) I think a lot of us are in our twenties. I am, at least.

From other threads i got this impression. And how old is fellow dutchie Ak Zaf? because he knows seemingly every MJ and every world champion since the 40's

No idea. But he did name himself after the great Abdel-Kader Zaaf, so you'd assume he's done some reading on the subject (the history of the Tour, that is).

Well, the Zaaf story is pretty well known... You needn't be a great scholar of the Tour to know that, truly awesome, story.

Well, normally in the Netherlands you learn English at primary school already (starting from 6th grade, 9/10 year olds). So most Dutch people should know decent English.
But that's not really the way I learned. Long story short: I have family living in America, so I picked it up from there.

Hey, I share my birthday with Laurens ten Dam. Not the same year either.

Has anybody heard any word on how Papa Gesink is doing? Hoping he will be OK and gets better soon.

I'm stuck with Haimar Zubeldia...

On the plus side though I also share dates with Clarence Seedorf, Ireen Wust (two time Olympic champion for the non-Dutch), Bismarck, Gogol, Rachmaninoff, Milan Kundera, Toshiro Mifune (star of a lot of Kurosawa's best films) and others... Sports, politics, culture. Us April Fools have got it made :p
