"I do not take any painkillers or stimulants whist racing or training"

Reminds me of this

“I do have exercise induced asthma.” Froome said after stage three. “I don’t use [the inhaler] every time I race, normally only when I have a big effort coming up. It’s a bit of a surprise everyone is talking about it."

Did Walsh write about the asthma in "The Climb"?

which means nothing when taken out of context like that. If you read the passage you will see he is referring to the Tramadol / finish bottle issue. He then goes on to cover the TUE issue, and if you notice, his words are consistent with his deeds.

Yes award winning journalist David Walsh had extensive coverage of Froome's asthma in his book

MV, I'm your number one fan, but the here topic is Walsh, not the posters posting about Walsh.

I know when I'm attacked is a deflection off Walsh. Doesn't worry me in the slightest. Just reaffirms my position on the matter.

I don't mind that Walsh believes are Sky are clean, it's just that he made such a hack of a job in doing it. It was woeful. If Froome can lie to him about asthma what else did he miss?

Sadly he's just become a joke.

Which actually is completely consistent with what Froome has been doing - he had a TUE for Romandie. Now, if someone needs stuff like that to be able to breathe then they should probably be laid up in bed - but anyway, that is a discussion in another thread.

A 'classic' would be calling for Tramadol to be banned / controlled whilst popping loads all the time.

well...we don't know he wasn't popping tramadol and how do we know he needed 'stuff like that'...we only have his word on that...and we know where trusting outperforming cyclists has got us in the past...

asthma, badzilla, chest infection, unable to handle a bike..how come somebody so bad can be so good...that should have been Walsh's tag line

I believe Sky has admitted to treating riders with Tramadol and refused to change policy till it became illegal.

Having Tramadol in a finish bottle is certainly not a stretch

Correct but haven't used it for two years:

"None of our riders should ride whilst using Tramadol –that's the policy of this team. Team Sky do not give it to riders whilst racing or training, either as a pre-emptive measure or to manage existing pain.

"We believe that its side-effects, such as dizziness and drowsiness, could cause issues for the safety of all riders. We also feel that if a rider has the level of severe pain for its appropriate use, they should not be riding.

"Tramadol is not prohibited by Wada, but this has been our firm position for the last two seasons and all medical staff and riders are aware of this. Our view is that it should be on the Wada list and any appropriate clinical use could be managed through the regulated TUE."

According to them. I don't really doubt it, as this isn't a big deal, but they have been caught out lying in so many public statements that I don't take anything they (or any other team) say at face value. So I'm not sure "Sky says so" confirms much. It's a data point.

Yes indeed. This caught my eye from their statement with respect to lying / Sky.

We also feel that if a rider has the level of severe pain for its appropriate use, they should not be riding.

Clearly they don't hold the same stance on horse steriods

So, what we have is that Sky are quite probably, but not definitively not using it, while other teams are using it.
Yes, I can see why that would get flak in some quarters.

What flak? I think you might seeing things.

I believe the reference is that Sky were using it and only admitted after Barry dropped them in it but claim now they're not.

Considering they tend to bend the truth on such matters it's hard to believe or know if they've moved onto another drug for painkilling purposes.

very new age.

Yes and before you know it, everyone is on crack-cocaine!

The Team Sky principal, Sir Dave Brailsford, likened doping to recreational drug use last year and his squad's no-Tramadol policy was reiterated at the team's training camp last November. "It is similar to someone having their first joint and then moving on to ecstasy or whatever," said Brailsford last year. "Then the next thing you know everyone is on crack cocaine."

I'm pretty sure that any given cycling team would require painkillers.
Be remarkable if they didn't.

but hey.

but we're not in this thread to talk about any given cycling team.
if you insist: any given cycling team isn't putting themselves on high horses as high as Team Sky, with ZTP and a reputed antidoping specialist on the payroll. And any given cycling team isn't denying the use of tramadol in press only to get caught out by contradictory statements of their own (ex)staff.
