On the receiving end of Walsh's journalistic rigour in today's ST - Rory McIlroy and Gary Neville

Number of times the Dawg is mentioned in the ST's sports section - zero

Number of letters in sports section about pro cycling - one (a corker which suggests drug test results are "random" because lean riders have suppressed immune systems)

Re:

Walsh in today's ST:

- Questions ethics of Froome asking for Giro appearance fee with AAF hanging over his head
- Questions why Cookson asked for Sky's reputation to be restored when he knew about Froome's AAF

Keep up, David! Re-hashing old news not exactly groundbreaking journalism...

Yep those pesky Brits knew Lizzie's little problem was going to go away as well - as you were!

Is this the first time Brailsford negotiated an appearance fee?
If so the whistle blower might have been motivated
by their objection to such blatant cashing in.

It’s disappointment that Walsh is still having trouble joining the dots on all of this. From Cookson, to Brailsford to Reedie. Walsh has the ability to bust open a story of corruption like no other but he is too old and decrepit to see it.

I think since the flush out of Cookson’s henchmen, Gibbs, Barfield etc. allowed for a leak to be very easily done. I think Lappirent has to get it into the public domain otherwise he could be accused of a cover up.

He's not having trouble connecting the dots, he's actively and consciously obfuscating the issues in service of team Sky. He is running point on their PR strategy in this case.

It's just not believable that anyone who's been around the sport as long as he has is this ignorant.

I'm surprised. I thought he'd turn on Sky like any decent journalist would.

There have to be constraints making loyalty more profitable than journalism.

Of course, he could be saving it all for the expose book he is writing...

I'm with you, I thought he'd turn on them. Seems clear that's not the case. He seems committed to this point. He is not a decent journalist and clearly hasn't been for a while. He's a salesman.

David Walsh has a neck made of brass. He was embedded in the team for years, sold a largely unsuspecting public the virtues of Sky via his Sunday newspaper column and a couple of books yet now has the temerity to appear on media dissing the same team that he had placed on a pedestal for years. How can a supposedly intellingent man knowing what he knew about professional cycling be duped in the manner he allowed himself. Was it wilful or did he genuinely believe them? I think he just enjoyed the publicity he got from the Lance affair and decided to ride the gravy train towards the end of his career as a doping crusader. Sky massaged his ego and buttered him up and he allowed himself be played like a fiddle. More reputable journalists must be shaking their head with disbeleif at him now trying to move back to the other side now.

in fairness to paul kimmage, he called d walsh out on a number issues of walshs ST articles, and then the issues of wiggins transformation, hiring of dr. leinders, jiffygate etc and walsh had no real defence at the time except to say that he believed what sky were telling him, which for in investigative reporter is not much of a defence.

When The Spectator puts the boot in you know you're in trouble

https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2018/03/the-shame-of-britains-sporting-heroes/

"Some traditional sports journalists also seem recently to have too easily surrendered their professional detachment around British sport’s biggest names. In the case of Team Sky, Times journalists Matthew Syed and David Walsh actually went to live with the team for a period of several weeks – in Walsh’s case for thirteen weeks – an event that may or may not have influenced their subsequent decisions to become vocal advocates for the team’s moral rectitude.

Walsh, who is famously credited with being the journalist who bought down Lance Armstrong, would later claim he was “duped” into vouching in print for the team by Sir David Brailsford; while Syed – who in December, 2016, wrote: “the success of British Cycling has been one of the most powerful stories in global sport, is a tribute to the work of many honourable people, and is a source of national pride. When we look back in ten years, I suspect that this basic narrative will remain intact” – has founded a lucrative and successful international speaking career on the back of Brailsford’s “marginal gains” credo. His book Black Box Thinking: Marginal Gains and the Secret of High Performance still rides high on best-seller lists.

Proper journalism in sport is important because sport ultimately is no different to every other area of life: people will break the rules to get ahead unless they are sufficiently disincentivised from doing so."

These things do make for interesting bedfellows. Here's a previous headline from that journalist:

It was an extremely well written article, Syed did respond to the it via tweet but it was more of his obtuseness.

Yes, I saw that

Syed went native a long time ago now, eh

Interesting to compare Brailsfraud's high profile cheerleaders

Alistair Campbell the uber-spin doctor - no one believes a word he says

But journos like Syed are meant to be objective, yes

Or to put it another way, if Syed's going to insert himself into the picture, he's the opposite of David Foster Wallace - no style and no (original) content

Walsh in yesterday's Sunday Times:

- An "I wanted to believe" mea culpa about his blind faith (such a useful trait in a journalist!) in Brailsfraud, Wiggo and Team Sky. Still no criticism of the Dawg. Just an observation that he and Brailsfraud are now closer than they've ever been. Poor David just can't join those final dots...

- Brit team doctor David Hulse who was opposed to "overloading riders with medication" was sacked after the duff 2010 season and given the usual payoff in return for signing an NDA, in came Leinders and Bartolucci to teach Freeman the dark arts (echoes of Prentice Steffen being kicked out of US Postal and replaced by those nice Spanish doctors). In 2013 Sky's sidelined Brit doctors Farrell, Baynes and Usher "ganged up" on Freeman to stop him getting a fourth TUE for Wiggo ahead of the 2013 Tour of Britain. They insisted on a change of team policy so two Sky doctors had to approve Sky's TUE applications. Freeman scuttled off to the all conquering Team GB track squad...

- Team Sky insiders believe Shane Sutton is the source for Lawton's jiffybag story (no *** Sherlock!). However, no one on the team dares to publicly criticise Sutton as they fear Sutton has provided a witness statement to Lawton stating it was triamcinolene in the jiffybag. Sky insiders say Sutton is a "brilliant coach and a loose cannon" and now the cannon is turned on them. Walsh says "in time the truth will emerge"

Sutton was touting the Jiffy bag story around twitter before it got to Lawton. Lawton swapped the story out from a piece on Shane to Wiggins. Nice deal.

Sutton is playing is hand beautifully. Every time he speaks out in defence of Wiggo and Brailsfraud he digs them further in a hole

And there is some mind-blowing stuff about Sutton, Sky and BC which is not yet in the public domain. The only reason Brailsfraud is clinging on in the face of huge pressure to resign is that he knows that, notwithstanding everything that's already in the public domain, things could get much, much worse :D
