Not possible to make 157km safe. This was just bad luck, didnt look like a dangerous part of the route.
There must have been something tricky in that section because Burgaudeau also went off-roading in the exact same spot out of the break.

True, but these years where too many races lack suspense because of a few very dominant riders, it’s a disaster when several top 10 riders are suddenly out.
It’s happened many times. Just look at 2014- nobody discounts Nibal’s win because Froome and Bertie crashed out. Roche and Delgado won in 1987-88 despite both LeMond and Fignon being injured or just way off their game due to illness/gatigue/tapeworm or whatever the hell caused Fignon to not be near his best.

I don’t want to dwell on the naughty times since we don’t even have a winner for those years.

I can consider different things, no need to dictate what I'm allowed to write. I have written plenty about the crash already.
I dont care about your thoughts u could say what u want but life is at stake here 😖

That bend was dangerous

Guy in break went off the road there and DSs knew it was sketchy

First down looked like a trek rider who was just behind Remco who panicked and kept going into the forest

I see some journo's on Twitter already criticizing the UCI and Itzulia for the route, I think that's such one-sided nonsense. I've cycled myself in Basque Country when I lived in Spain, it is fairly impossible to design a route in this geograhpy that doesn't contain curvvy, steep descents. If you want to take rider safety seriously, we should be talking about the responsiblity of teams, DS and riders themselves in how much risk they are taking on these kind of terrain. If you want to be critical, I get the point that you need to put clearer demarcation of a dangerous corner coming up, but claiming that these kinds of descents shouldn't be in a race is just plain out impossible.

Hoping that all riders involved will be OK.

Just got in from a run and turned on to this. I skipped back on the broadcast timeline ... now I wish I hadn't. Why the heck were they just leaving Vine lying as though he was dead? I feared the absolute worst.
