On a closer look you can see different riders crashing independently of each other: likely speed and some leaves are the main causes. Teams, DS and organization could have helped preventing this one.

Every time i see the footage, it seems like there is a bump in the road, you can see riders hopping. In the google maps link somebody posted, i can't see a bump, but you can see tracks in the asphalt, probably made by heavy trucks throughout the years. Maybe this is the cause?

En innocuous looking bend in the road turns into a place of disaster. Hope all involved can fully recover.
The hows and whys can be discussed at length another day, but there was no rain, wind or potholes.

How are the organizers going to get rid of all the dangers from the road?
Let's be honest is impossible. This is terrible but cycling is very risky. Debris on the road is part of that risk unfortunately.

nooo, not Cras... he was in the ditch, no? He must be one of the most unlucky Belgian GC riders ever. Crashed while aiming for a top 10 in last year's Tour due to a spectator. Now this...

You can make the obvious things safer but on routes that sometimes cover 1000s of km it is impossible to account for every eventuality, there doesn't always need to be someone to blame and the rush to do so it sometimes a bit distasteful.

The Streetview imagery posted upthread is 14 years old, on this drone imagery from last year you can see the potholes. With that in mind, and given that there wasn't that much descending to check for this particular stage, the organisers not seeing the potential danger of this curve looks bad without hindsight too.

Actually insane. And then you think he's just a bad bike handler but I remember some of his crashes, just pure bad luck every time. I remember his crash in La Vuelta 2 years ago, just chilling at the back of the peloton and some fan tackles another rider that then crashes Cras out. Broken hand...

I’ve crashed on a bike path under these conditions. Broke my collar bone 😁

i dont get this. its a sport, people get hurt. everyone is conscious, nobody is dead. why are the commentators making such a big deal about racing on here? kirby doesn't want to see the podiums. go sit in the garden and watch the flowers grow then if this is so upsetting.
