He's in great form this Vuelta.

Riding for himself
I expect both he and Ayuso will be picking up total Dom duty from here on out unless Almeida completely folds. The GC is now the prize and those two have had their days of unfettered freedom with great results.

If they are off the chain completely, they need to consider that, next to riding for a Kazakh run team they are riding for a situation in UAE they should not mess with. Embarrassing the sponsors would be very, very bad.

If Almeida is still in the fight after Angrilu, then any UAE rider seeking personal stage glory should be fired on the spot. Or perhaps there are more disgruntled riders at UAE than Ayuso?

Mou has said all along these riders are signed with promises of personal glory. Maybe he’s right again
Right, but Vine has his two stages, Ayuso one, so until Almeida drops out of contention the whole team must now ride for him at the expense of personal ambitions. Anything less at this point, given too Pog isn't racing, and something isn't functioning within the team.

Ayuso: "it's like a dictatorship.." Spoken like a young 20-something that hasn't realized his boss, UAE is a, er...uh...semi-constitutional MONARCHY. You know; like Kings n' ***. Very definition of a dictatorship and you signed a deal to 2028 to serve them.

Well, I think the UAE royal house (or prince within it) simply invests to launder some cash, really. The real tyranny, if that's what it is, is doubtless conducted by the Robespierre of cycling and his Jacobin deputy.

Doesn't take inside knowledge to say that... it's sort of the only way you stockpile young uber-talents like Del Toro, Christen, Morgado, Ayuso etc. You think that UAE pick them up at 18, after they've been winning every age group race imaginable, by telling them they're going to be a domestique?

Either UAE have built their squad in a scattergun approach, or perhaps they never intended to have a cohesive unit and wanted to just hoover up wins. My guess is the former. They didn't do it like Visma and build their team around three riders (Roglic, Vingegaard, Van Aert) plus a load of domestiques, or Sky before them.

Feels like he put himself on a short list of guys who could threaten to win the Worlds ITT. I guess I should look and see if he's going...

EDIT: Looks like it's not on his schedule, NM...
He is obviously doing the TT. It's been a big goal for him all season long. He's also doing the mixed relay. And he's doing the road race.

OK good, I read an article that said it wasn't on his schedule. Thanks.

He is a poor descender and we don’t know his longevity over a three week GT but if he is targeting TT it means he has ticked two boxes required of grand tour riders. Would be good if he can resolve his weaknesses so we see what he can do.

He's an ideal rider for the Vuelta. Short stages with easy mountain finishes.
In comparison, he had a mediocre Giro because the stages were more demanding.

He's never been in the lead in a race over 200km.

Australia was the big disappointment today

What was disappointing about Australia?
The course didn't suit Matthews, vine has 0 results in 1 day races and Hindley was present in G2, making his best performance in a big 1 day race.
Yes, had he stayed with the likes of Roglic, Hindley could've been 8th, but you can't expect much more from him or Australia. Hence no reason to call them "big disappointment".

Not sure if you checked how many people are on the DNF list.. Only a select few even got a finish result.. Don't think disappointment is exclusive to Australia..

What. Australia rode up to expectations with Hindley and Storer as the leaders.. Hindley who is not an accompolished one day rider was in the chasing group of 5 until he cracked with 2 laps to go and then like Pidcock came back to the field. His 16th place does not reflect his overall performance. Anyway their best one day rider for this parcour O'Connor chose not to race, not that he has been in good form.

I thought they were going to blow up the race in the breakaway and the peloton. I'm disappointed that they were chasing Belgium's pace.
Afterwards Hindley had a great performance, but I was referring to what I expected from them as a team.

Vine didn't surprise me. He was being included in many bets as a medal , but we've already mentioned that he's a rider for short efforts and not difficult courses.

But why would they blow the race apart?
I meano, for whom?
Hindley, 0 results on 1 day races
Vine - same.
Plapp - look above
Matthews - Course was too hard for him.
Storer - 13th in Lombardia as his best result in a proper 1 day race.

I'd say Australia was surprisingly good, given what you could realistically expect.
