You gotta listen to what Remco says about the whole giro 2021 in this podcast! He says he told Joao to go for himself on that stage where Joao had to wait. But the team didn't allow it :O He also says it was a really dumb decision to let him go for GC in that giro!

Because it was peak joao almeida until today. I continue to believe that joao almeida was more stronger on quick step, specially in the giro 2021. Like remco said, with his help he would win on sega di ala, and without the orders by the team to wait for remco, he would already do podium on giro 2021.

Yup podium I definitely believe was in his reach. But I don't necessarily believe he was better. It's more like the competition got better too

Yes. He also had to wait on zoncolan and work in other stages to remco.

Remco should not have been a leader on quickstep in 2021, except for small Belgian races. They wasted opportunities to support him. They could have get a Giro podium with almida if they had faith in his level and support him (for some reason they had faith in remco level even though he was never proven in a grand tour, unlike almida). Almida in final week was the strongest.

They also put too much effort to support remco in late season Italy races, only one he won was coppa bernocchi , which is the smallest and he did it thanks to Fausto help. They could win lombardia with Fausto if they support him and not flop remco, maybe they could also win milano torino if they didn't make fausto work.

What I remember from that stage was Evenepoel deciding to get dropped early on the Passo San Valentino before perhaps changing his mind and catching back the group towards the top.

If he was planning to help Almeida that day, it didn't really look like it.

Yes, evenepoel said that, and personally i believe in that. I think he crashed in the descent of passo san valentino. Almeida lost to martin by just 13 seconds.

Evenepoel said the pace was really high at the beginning of San Valentino and he couldn't follow, but then he found his pace and managed to get back. He then crashed in the following descent. The plan was to help Almeida win the stage.

The reason why Almeida lost the stage was that he chased up to one of the GC riders who was chasing Martin, and then refused to work with the GC rider.

I 100% agree, but i also think that if he wanted to leave quick step, he should had go to Bora instead of emirates.

I did not heard the interview but I do find a bit odd (to say the least…) those comments by Remco.
My memories from that Giro are Almeida not waiting for Remco (which, imo and based on the race scenario, made perfect sense) and Remco clearly not happy with the whole situation… team eventually had to intervene…

If you listen to the interview he will explain that he said to Almeida not to wait while the team asked Almeida to wait. He didn't explain why he was not happy but I can imagine that he was not happy with his own shape and possibly with the team orders putting pressure on him and Almeida knowing that in the end it wouldn't really help.

He said he wanted to go for a stage earlier on, but was forced to save himself for GC which he knew he wasn't capable of. Almeida wanted to go for GC but was forced to be a domestique for him.
