The accident occurred because Almeida's bicycle tire exploded, so the accident could´ve occurred in any position.
In fact, if it had occurred in front, the accident would´ve affected more riders.

It could happen to anyone. It's not the first time it's happened.

This happened to Pogacar last year at the Giro, on the Oropa stage.

If you look at the accident again, you can see the liquid escaping from the tire.

I guess that's what tubeless tires do. Having a flat can be more dramatic sometimes.

Afaik, Contador crashed because of a pothole on the descent from Petit Ballon while he took a hand off his handlebars to eat.

Very decent of him to stick around for post-race interviews, I thought.

Seemed like he did not wish to complain, but acknowledged that speedbumps and getting out of the saddle were painful. He hoped to still be helpful to the team.

Front tire did not explode. He had punctured and was riding at low speed waiting for the car when the tire rolled off the rim at a corner.

Pogacar's tire did not explode in Oropa. It's in slow motion at 1:25 in this video:

He had punctured and was riding slow waiting for the car. The tire rolls off the rim at the contact zone with the road when he was taking a corner and sealant spills out.

So now @SHAD0W93 if the cause of the crash was the exploded tyre then it still means the crash literally had nothing to do with Almeida so I can still say he doesn't crash lol. I still think this was why he looked so confused, on top of hurting.

He needs to quit. In these sorts of situations I reckon there needs to be an independent medical team than makes a unilateral ruling to withdraw the rider - no matter what the rider or his team say.

I could see that for a head injury, where someone’s judgement could be temporarily impaired, but otherwise I feel strongly that we should err on the side of personal autonomy and self-determination.

Whose interests would be served by such an authoritarian approach? Why would we want to deny someone a chance to push through adversity and rise to a challenge?

I guess they will assess during restday. Would probably make more sense to let him heal and send him to the Vuelta. I'm sure his good friend and soon to be best man at his wedding, Ayuso, would be thrilled.
