I wonder whether a guy who wins monuments is actually worth more than a guy who wins the Champs-Élysées sprint. Probably depends on the sponsor and what monument we're talking. In general, though, everything Tour related is a pretty big deal because the Tour is huge, easily dwarfing every other race.

Cav become one of the best paid riders not because of MSR or the Worlds.

More or less agree, I think it's pretty understandable that Kittel is their best paid rider, even after John won two monuments, as long as Kittel doesn't fail in July.

John D is a beast at the moment,

He works well with Kittel also at the Tour, if there a hilly finish Degenkolb can go up against Sagan

Perfectly ridden race by him and his team. He was always in the front, he made a decisive attack timed with his team and owned everyone in the sprint. The guy is a beast.

Just watched his Roubaix win from last year again, really sad he does not start this year, any idea what his injury state is?

His recovery takes a few months, especially his finger that needs to regain full functionality. I remember reading that Bayern Rundfahrt would be his comeback goal.

From his instagram, he seems to be back on the bike as of the last couple of weeks but is still in physio, and his finger is still in a splint as of a week ago:

Does anyone have info on his goals for this season now? Shame he's been out injured. Is road race in Rio a legitimate target of his? Can't wait to see him back in the peloton a great character missed for now.

I thought the team would prepare him for TdF. Rio is outofthe question way too hilly.

Really happy for him. Seeing the final TdF week and now this I think he can come back to his old level. I really started to doubt that.

Kristoff and Demare have been pretty poor so far though.

Yeah, Demare won Milan-San Remo... And his results after that make me believe what some other riders have said about his victory...

Third over the Kemmelberg today after Van Avermaet and Sagan. The constant succession of hills in Flanders might be too much for him but he's definitely ready for Roubaix.

He does look like he's finding his real racing condition again after missing most of last season, he really does look like he's timed his form nicely for Roubaix

Ofcourse he's not a full compensation for Cancellara in the classics, but whatever strength Trek lacks in individual power, they now have in their collective power. That said, I was really surprised to see him go so well on Kemmelberg. If he avoids crashing up until Paris Roubaix, I'd probably have him as my biggest favourite, because he's as strong on the flat as Vanmarcke and Sagan and he possesses a better sprint than anyone bar Kristoff (who on the other hand always comes up short in Paris Roubaix). Crossing my fingers for John D and Trek!

He's moving (within his town) and been more involved in this process than expected because he's now got the time, obviously.
After P-R he took a time-out of a week, like he's always doing, only this time he did not have a P-R in his legs. Since tuesday he's started training again.
It's very hard for him to train and train without a clear goal. He's used to having a goal, the next race in sight since his youth. To deal with this pressure has always been his big strength.

Still he considers himself lucky compared to other riders in other countries.

He thinks a lot about the situation, not only for himself but for cycling in general. Cycling after corona will not be the same as before. Lots of races will probably vanish. Cycling will not be able to present itself like before and a negative spiral will have set in. Pro cycling will have to restructure itself. He hopes the cyclingworld will not freeze in fear but operate together.

Riders at LS have given up 30% of their income. There's only 6 people of stuff left: manager, DSs and a (virtually working) doc.

He hopes that as much as possible of the GTs, not necessarily all three of them, and the monuments will happen, that would be extremely important for the sport. That's the straw that he clings to in training.

It might be his chances in the sport are vanishing, at 33. But he can look back to a great career, and is rather thinking of other livelihoods. For instance the new blood. Month of racing have been taken from them. He's also thinking of other sports like net ball and hockey. Those who are not looking forward somehow positively will become desperate.

He was a massive surprise today, and I think he was third-strongest. Honestly, I guess that‘s what cycling is about partly. You don‘t get the guy you want to win, but the guy who completes the course the fastest. I just wanted to revive this thread somewhat.

I was definitely rooting for him.
