Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

There's a few comments and moments over the last ~12 months that suggest to me Vingegaard is either really naturally passive or doesn't beleive in himself as much as he should.

  1. Ventoux attack was really late on the climb. But it can be excused by Van Aert being up the road I guess
  2. Saying he had bad legs on Luz Ardiden when he got 2nd.
  3. His comments about his win on Col de Granon, about not being sure he should attack Pogacar and thinking about not doing it. I think it was super obvious Pogacar was suffering like a dog on Granon even before he got dropped.
  4. No moves on Alpe d'Huez yesterday. Very defensive strategy by Jumbo. This can be down to Jumo, but he did close Pogacar very easily, but he didn't even try to counter once.

Frankly, Vingegaard is no Rasmussen!

Nice evolution. Fish factory > Chris Harper > Yellow jersey

I'd say the team sporting directors & structure is responsible for however this race is going right now for Vingegaard. They'll micromanage from here on like it's 2020 all over again. Roglic actually complained about the tactics they employed in that TdF, but like him in 2020, I doubt Vingegaard has any say whatsoever in how they now proceed tactically. Jumbo will be back in their comfort zone, aka defensive robotic racing with a train.

On Alpe I can totally imagine Maassen & Niermann in the team cars shouting 'ride defensive', 'no need to waste energy', 'we have a big enough gap already', 'it's up to Pogacar now', 'just follow', 'wait for Sepp he's right there behind you' etc.

I bet they're the ones who told him when to attack on Granon as well.

It doesn't matter, one attack seems enough until now to win the Tour, whether he was in doubt or someone told him to go for it. It is the first time he is in the driver's seat at the biggest cycling event in the world. All he needs to do is follow one dude, nothing special, no crazy stunts.

Maybe he will evolve in the future or maybe he'll be the same passive rider with a thousand watts at his diaposal, time will tell.

I looked through the danish news sites and can't find where he says the last climb was easy like that twitter user claims. Is there a video?

Here's the actual quotes (ie in news outlets) about the toughness of the stage and a little about tomorrow's stage.

- I hoped to win the stage of course. But a finish like this one was a little too explosive for me. And it should probably have been harder, that's easy to say, but I don't think they (UAE) raced as hard on the last climb as on the second last, which I thought was the hardest.

- Of course it was hard to follow. When there's only three guys left it has not been easy. So of course it was megahard and you have to fight for it.

- I expected more attacks. At least I didn't think he wouldn't try.

- A finish such as this doesn't suit me. It's like PDBF and I think the stage thursday will suit me better. It was a hard day because Tadej had good attacks but thankfully I was able to follow.

He said it on TV that they didnt go as fast as the previous climb which was obviously correct. At the same time, he implied he would have no problem following a harder tempo, suggesting that it would benefit him.

The question then is, why are you not making it harder yourself?

Based on UAE reaction their plan was to to attack on Col d’Azet and go solo into the last climb. According to Hauptman when they could not distance Vingo it was just about the stage win at the last climb.

Although Pogi says he will try until the end (obviously he will) I think they are realizing that Vingo has to have an off day or some other type of bad luck to stand a chance to go for a TDF victory.

Probably because he doesn't want to put his nose in the wind and risk losing time to Pog. Makes sense to just stay in his wheel, even if it's a bit boring.
