Well he has made Ilmaestro a sad man in recent years.
After a difficult period of over two years the best French cyclist of this century hits back with an impressive stage win in the Giro.
In 2018-2021 he was one of the best riders in the world, but the tide turned in 2022. His crash in LBL was the beginning of a long period of struggle, with many crashes, health issues, motivational problems, clashes with his manager and doubts about his future.
He showed signs of good will, with a stage win in the Dauphiné last year and several attempts in other races. Crashes and physical problems kept him from having a good spring. After his second place last week he grabbed his chance in the stage that suited him best: the one with the muritos. Instead of waiting for a confrontation in the final he attacked early and fought until the end. Rewarded at last! He'll probably enjoy this one more than some of his bigger wins in the past.

Ala winning yesterday, the way he did, and all the emotion afterwards, the bond between him and Maestri .... one of my favourite moments in 4 decades of watching cycling.
I just hope this isn't a "Sagan at the Giro 2021" last gasp but a precursor to another big win. (edit: or was that 2020?)
Anyway, legendary ride. I hope he goes to another team next year, but one that has high expectations outside of France (i.e., NOT Total or Cofidis, although Cofidis in particular could use him)

Last night went for a run in the rain, got home and posted my thoughts, phone screen a bit wet hence some tipos.

Still, what a different scenario from when he was in Yellow, and Brailsford said he might be the GOAT, and fighting for wins in the Giro. How Quick cycling has changed for Dave.
I heard on Sporza commentators saying he's not going to the Tour. Anyone can confirm?
JA told Patti that he's out so two questions: where will he end up, and what kind of racer will he be in 2025?
Do we know if he's able to walk today? The amount of times he tightened his shoes in the finale yesterday, I think he might have broken some bones.
It turns out Alaphilippe is back to the level he was at in Leuven when he destroyed the field in the greatest race ever. It's just that the field has changed. The goalposts have shifted and it's an uneven playing surface.
