Guy Wins Race Against NYC Bus On Big Wheel
If you've ever ridden the bus in New York City, you know it is a damn slow experience. But, unlike a taxi, it's a couple of bucks, and unlike a subway, it's above-ground. So people put up with it. But exactly how slow is an MTA bus? Mark Malkoff decided to test it out and he videotaped himself racing a bus, down 42nd st from 10th to Madison ave,

Piglet with monkey’s face / Holoprosencephaly / Homer’s Cyclops

this is the result of a neurological-facial malformation called Holoprosencephaly. “The cause is thought to be a genetic alteration, in this case probably due to environmental exposure to certain chemicals.”

With some trepeidation, I did a google image search for “Holoprosencephaly” and found some Cyclops looking individuals. One startling photo showed baby with its two eyes in a central eye socket … and no nose. So, it’s not just pigs. This happens occasionally in humans too. This same developmental disorder caused the cyclops kitten you may have seen a while back.

It would be interesting to figure out which chemicals might have caused this… but keep in mind that legends of a Cyclops goes way back, so modern pollutants can’t be the only cause. Yes, I think Cyclopes were real.

Charlotte Motor speedway in North Carolina geared up for the Bank of America 500 Nascar Sprint Cup series this week with a new menu. To help amp up the crowd, they introduced some unique eats.

Nothing says fast cars and burning rubber like the funnel bacakonator. This bad boy belongs with the artery-clogging, greasy, gluttonous offerings you're likely to find at a county fair. The bacakonator consists of a large funnel cake drizzled with chocolate and strawberry sauces, topped with a hefty helping of bacon.

Also on the menu is the Charlotte pimento mac 'n' cheese burger. Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like (but more): an Angus beef burger topped with a scoop of pimento mac 'n' cheese, then covered in crumbled pork rinds. I can't tell if my heart is pounding from sheer excitement or fear.

And flagging it for offense was a tough decision. But I ask you this, if a forum is to be open, should it entertain posts that demeans its members in a finite manner, or should the debate be done to engender thoughtful self appraisal? Because, contrary to your portrayal, it was not a post that was meant to open debate or make point of pragmatic common sense. It was meant to be offensive.

So what? It appears to have worked. It touches a nerve, you get offended. It's like dentistry for your convictions.

I understand your protestation. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I should have looked at the picture and moved on never to view it again. If I made a mistake, it was a mistake of sincere pain in seeing the center of a belief system that took a gun out of my mouth and gave me a reason to hope that the next morning was worth waking up for degraded in a way that seemed meant only do belittle. Maybe I need thicker skin sometimes. I have been told that and I thought I was being told water is wet. Do I believe Jesus was all that concerned, no I don't. I don't cater to the petulant child version of God promoted by modern Christianity.

If I offended you by objecting then I apologize. It was a reflexive reaction. If you have never had one, then you are a lucky man indeed.

You offended me by censoring something you disagreed with, thus proving yourself to be a hypocrite, and potentially ruining this thread in the bargain.

one thing, sometimes the openness of a dialog depends on pushing boundaries in order to learn something new.

This is the Free form/Chaos Thread, don't like Free form/Chaos, then go to another thread. Pretty simple concept.

I stay out of threads that are boring and basically empty so if you consider this thread such then ...

Or has Free form/Chaos's meaning been re-defined?

Some members need a reality check, its not a Forum for just one person's opinion views.

This place is getting ridiculous.

"[At speakers' corner] freedom of speech could not be limited to the inoffensive but extended also to 'the irritating, the contentious, the eccentric, the heretical, the unwelcome, and the provocative, as long as such speech did not tend to provoke violence', and that the right to free speech accorded by Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights also accorded the right to be offensive."

So are we to take your apologies and second thoughts as meaning that in future should similar posts appear you won't complain, and should someone else complain and get a post deleted you will join us in defending the vitality of this thread?

No, it wasn't like dentistry for my convictions. I made a mistake.

OH NO!!! A THREAD ON THE INTERNET WAS DESTROYED TODAY, HOW WILL MANKIND EVER FUNCTION AGAIN???!!!!....no wait, the thread is still here...
Secondly, we are all hypocrites at some point. If you fail to ever see that you are, you have larger problems than being a hypocrite.

The answer to your question is that yesterday was the last time I will lodge a protest to a post on this thread.

Long-Range Weather Prediction

Summer was coming to a close. The Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be severe or mild.

Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught old secrets; when he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell how the weather was going to be.

Nevertheless, to be safe, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be bad and that everybody should collect wood and be prepared.

Being a practical leader, he had an idea after a few days. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked "Is the coming winter going to be bad?" "It looks like this winter is going to be terrible," the meteorologist at the weather service responded.

So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Is it going to be a cold winter?" "Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "It definitely will be very severe."

The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service again. "Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?"

"Absolutely," the man replied. "It's going to be one of the coldest winters ever."

"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "Because the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!"

IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT
FOR THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF TEXAS
AUSTIN DIVISION

THERESA MORRIS, WIFE OF
BOB MORRIS,
Plaintiff,

-vs-

JOHN COKER, ALLIS-CHALMERS
CORPORATION AND/OR STRATE
DIRECTIONAL DRILLING, INC.,

Defendants.
ORDER

BE IT REMEMBERED on this day the Court reviewed the files in the above-styled causes, and now enters the following opinion and orders.

Non-parties Lance Langford, Erik Hoover, and Brigham Oil & Gas, L.P. invite the Court to quash subpoenas issued to them on behalf of Jonathan L. Woods, in relation to a matter currently pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Lafayette-Opelousas Division, because the subpoenas were not properly served, are overly broad and unduly burdensome, and seek privileged information. In response, the Court issues the following invitation of its own:

Greetings and Salutations!

You are invited to a kindergarten party on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. in Courtroom 2 of the United States Courthouse, 200 W. Eighth Street, Austin, Texas.

The party will feature many exciting and informative lessons, including:

How to telephone and communicate with a lawyer

How to enter into reasonable agreements about deposition dates

How to limit depositions to reasonable subject matter

Why it is neither cute nor clever to attempt to quash a subpoena for technical failures of service when notice is reasonably given; and

An advanced seminar on not wasting the time of a busy federal judge and his staff because you are unable to practice law at the level of a first year law student.

Invitation to this exclusive event is not RSVP. Please remember to bring a sack lunch! The United States Marshals have beds available if necessary, so you may wish to bring a toothbrush in case the party runs late.

Accordingly,

IT IS ORDERED that defense counsel Jonathan L. Woods, and movants' attorney Travis Barton, shall appear in Courtroom 2 of the United States Courthouse, 200 W. Eighth Street, Austin, Texas, on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., for a memorable and exciting event;

IT IS FINALLY ORDERED that Mr. Barton is responsible for notifying Mr. Woods of this order by providing him with a copy by mail or fax on this date.

SIGNED this the 26th day of August 2011.

SAM SPARKS
UNITED STATES DISTRICT JUDGE

(See the order -- PDF, 76K)

Update: We hear from the Texas Lawyer Blog that attorney Travis Barton provided this update: "On August 29, we informed the Court that the underlying case had settled and all issues had been resolved in the week before the Court issued the August 26 order. The Court cancelled the hearing." Opposing attorney Jonathan Woods had no comment.

This turntable costs as much as a house
he Onedof can accommodate three tonearms; pretty good, but not quite the most we've seen. At $150,000, I wonder if One-off might be a more appropriate name, or will they find some equally crazy audiophiles to buy some? Oh and by the way, that price does not include the $9750 you'll need for the Tri-Planar tonearm and Benz LP cartridge.
