Of course Armstrong is doing well. He has a very good swimmer back in the day, clearly can ride, and is a decent runner.

When a Triathlon gets 700,000 people on the side of the road cheering them on and live, global TV then I will believe that the competition level is similar. It isn't, and to pretend it is absurd.

Funny Udo Bolts name should come up. A few weeks ago I was riding with a couple friends, both former Pro Triathletes. One did 8:40 Ironman at 40 and the other top 3 at Kona, twice. They knew Udo well and said he was the hardest, badass mofo they had ever met.

Udo never won a Classic, the Worlds etc.

It is a niche sport inhabited mostly by entrants who "Just want to finish" . There are some amazingly dedicated athletes in Tri but nowhere remotely close to what you get in the Pro Cycling

Do you believe Armstrong is clean now?

28 mph on the bike for 2 hours followed by a 1:16 half marathon? ET IMHO.

Most people with a reasonable IQ would not believe Lance if he said the sky was blue.

Go to some triathlon sites if you want to be amused. 60-70 year old men carrying on like schoolgirls...

Posters on Slowtwitch are saying that it's a foregone conclusion that he will win Hawaii. A couple of the 'where's Johan?' threads were deleted, along with many anti-Lance threads/posts.

Firstoffthebike is a total Lance love-fest. Negative feedback about him is often removed from the comments section of articles.

I think you are losing the plot on this. How many people watch a 50km cross-country ski World Cup race, a rowing or canoeing race or a 3,000m steeplechase? But the athletes that win world and Olympic titles in those events are absolutely top class athletes as well. In many cases they test as well as top class cyclists or better on measures of fitness.

Udo may be all that you say, but the point is that he did not win anything in triathlon, whereas Armstrong came from tri and went on to dominate cycling, or rather the Tour. If what you say about all Tour riders being better athletes than any triathlete were true, then this is not the pattern we should expect. I continue to think that you should stop pushing the line of how easy it is to win triathlons and start focussing on how implausible it is that someone can run the best half marathon of their life at 40 after doing 45kmh on the bike for 2 hours. While, I might add, still not looking like a natural runner. Something's up, and it's probably hemocrit (among other things).

If he ends up racing Kona this year, I have a suspicion he's going to do a lot better than the non-fanboys think he will. A properly prepared athlete of his caliber against a handful of other athletes that are somewhere in the ballpark of his talent but who are probably all rank amateurs when it comes to proper preparation. I doubt the drugs can overcome the age and his running handicap for him to win it but I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the podium.

From a personal perspective I’m worried about him. No doubt his still doping and he certainly won’t be testing positive anytime soon in Triathlon. Its really is a free for all for him. My biggest concern is his health. I’d hate to think what he’s doing to himself. He’s been at the dope since 16. Not nice. A little ugly if you ask me.

It is certainly likely that Lance is up to his old tricks, but this does not mean that the sport of Triathlon has the competitive depth that is anywhere close to that of Cycling. The depth has improved a lot in recent years but it is still largely made up of people who "Just want to finish"

A parent at my kids's school has that lame "m-dot" tattoo on his calf. I see him out and about in his oh-so-aero "tuck" position on his Cervelo (you know, the easy Monday active-recovery ride... still caring about his aerodynamics). Can I please shoot him?

It should be perfectly legal for people with M-dot tattoos to be beaten like mimes.

You guys sound like the DJs from Clear Channel.
They are helping support cycling. Why do you care what they look like?

Sure they helped the bottom line of one LBS with a bike purchase, I will give you that. Please do tell us about the support of cycling that you claim.

I am going to head to the local tattoo parlor and have someone design a "I finished Ride The Rockies" logo and see how many takers there are. My treat! Don't forsee it costing me too much.

One of these.

Although that looks like a pretty poor example.

Armstrong has found the perfect sport for himself. Triathlon is filled with self centered, egotistical, attention seeking d0uchebags.

How do you tell which one the guests at a party has done an Ironman triathlon? You don't have to. He'll tell you.

It wouldn't be so ridiculous if this were a competition photo instead of just Monday's training ride:

Really, kind of like some out of shape wanabees riding their first century.
Come on, Tri is a real sport. It deserves respect, and the Ironman Hawaii is the most prestigious tri, thusly it will attract the most talented field.

Usually Charity folks think I am into it since they see me at my office during lunch going for my runs etc. Then the look on their faces when I tell them there is no chance in hell that I will either donate or participate.

“Prices and participation may vary” and I “AINT” participating in nothing.

Mimes are the creapiest things on earth besides the aliens.
