Lance being Lance

Just stumbled upon this: When John Collins & Co. set up the first Ironman in Hawaii, they handed out sheets with rules and course description and one important statement:

“Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!”

See, it is the original vision of the sport :)

What's also impressive to me is the chance he gives people to say "I beat Lance Armstrong". Since he's been doing the tris, a lot of people have gotten that chance. It sort of goes against the image of him as an ego maniac.

Perhaps, but he is of course minimising people's chance of being able to say "I beat Lance Armstrong", in his time-honoured way. So is he there to give people that chance, or is it rather so that he can say "I won" (and thereby leverage his fame and revenue potential)?

What is the importance of the tattoo?
No one in my family has one, are we missing out??

Probably, if you're the sort of family that says "look at me, look at meeeeee".

I wonder if LA would be doing Ironman if it was called "Dorkman" or "BigTriRace". The word ironMan appeals to those who like to think they have large appendages.

I think people dislike Triathlon because it's a sport of allrounders. It's never going to have the best cycling, the best runner or swimmer, but it does take a special type of athlete to be solid in the three disciplines. What's amazing about Armstrong is he can still hack it in the other disciplines enough to be competitive and even now win. What's also impressive to me is the chance he gives people to say "I beat Lance Armstrong". Since he's been doing the tris, a lot of people have gotten that chance. It sort of goes against the image of him as an ego maniac.

Roadies should be thankful for Triathlon because it means there is at least one sport with a higher ******bag quotient. Seems to me the ******baggery in triathlon largely comes from the guys who want the sport to be something other than what it is, which is a participatory sport where every finisher is a winner. Why that it is, I don't know. Mountain bikers, runners, etc. seem fine with their sport being what it is.

What's even more ironic is that the inflated egos of the typical triathlete ******bag is largely fueled by being able to beat up on a bunch of slow age groupers that are only there thanks to it being a participatory sport.

Little does the guy know that adding the word “pride” in the sentence brings only one connotation – stride of pride and all of that.

PS, what are the odds this guy posts here under a certain well-known pseudonym?

LA looks a bit constipated there. Maybe the tattoo artist did this on purpose?

Ride With Pride. Just wow.

These last few postings with pictures have made me feel very sick to my stomach. I would have something else to add but I think the Delta Bravo trigeeks have been covered.

HOW in the hell can LA go to KONA without qualifying? That is a rule correct? I might be wrong but I thought you had to earn a spot in it first. Hell he will end up being like the rest of the Delta Bravo’s that get into a particular Marathon that I like with a “corporate sponsor slot”.

What a bunch of Crap it is to find out that the person who is standing next to you before the start is not only not capable of holding a sub 5:45 minute mile for 26.2 AND if that was not enough …..they did not qualify at all. They have a friend of a friend who works for Quaker oats and they came to the marathon ……..

Omg

While on a training run in Memorial Park @ Houston I saw this kid (I say kid but maybe he was in his 20’s) no shirt on with a tattoo in old English on his stomach that said THUG LIFE! WHAT THE F@#! I immediately thought that his parents should be beaten for allowing him to have such a Delta Bravo / Whisky Tango tattoo. Maybe his poor parents have no clue. Anyhow any amount of words in conversation with this poor excuse for a human would have been a waste of time.

Sure they helped the bottom line of one LBS with a bike purchase, I will give you that. Please do tell us about the support of cycling that you claim.

from charlie's blog

The next aspect is the cost of training and equipment. Triathletes drop $4000-$5000 on the bike,

How many bike racers do you know that spend that on a bike? I don't and I am riding a S-Works SL4s and Litespeed Blade.

Every sport has its critics. Cycling is known for being cliquey to outsiders and for endless feuding and general tribal attitudes.

Anyone who has sat on the committee of a cycling club can attest to this.

And this is why tattoos can be a dangerous thing. Once you're that committed to a concept, you sort of have to stay committed to it (or you look like the world's biggest idiot).

Ergo, Lance's fanboys are probably sporting lame tattoos underneath (Doh!)

Damn, Polish has a sweet back tat. Must have been expensive. Good to see that the LBS is still a profitable venture these days.

That Lance Tattoo is ok I guess. Looks like the Victory Salute from the "No Gifts Stage" if I'm not mistaken. That's cool. But I would pick the Lance Face from the "Simeoni Staredown" instead. Classic.

"Hungry Eddy" on one arm, "Angry Lance" on the other.
Would be AWESOME you know its true. Maybe a "FAUSTO" tattoo on the forehead, but that may be pushing coolness a bit too far.

+1000 to this. Competitive cycling has quite a bit of work to do to change this behaviour.

As fun as the Tri-geek beat down was to read, it's like a Sacha Cohen movie, it highlights the worst behaviour of some people to comedic extremes. Easily the best part is the people that are drawn into defending/denying the carefully selected observations. It is a kind of entertainment.

a polemic is intended to establish the supremacy of a single point of view by refuting an opposing point of view.
