Not sure that there is a storyline except that LA was already a star as a 19 year old amateur. I took that photo after the 1991 crit nationals in Salt Lake City (LA won the RR a few days later). On the podium are 1. Jonas Carney 2. LA 3. Eddy Gragus 4. Leif Harnden 5. a disappointed guy from team Turin who was higher on the podium in 1990.

This is a bit OT, but LA lead out Carney so hard on the last lap that Carney thought they were both going down in the turns (I got those interviews on VHS somewhere). The field basically sprinted for 3rd. Both winners rolleyes where later autographing Subaru/Montgomery team photos. That team photo also features Thom Weisel, Eddy B., Jim Ochowicz, and Steve Johnson among others.

To the extent that at the time he was touted as the next LeMond. When faced with that suggestion, he responded: "Hopefully we're doing something right". Frankly, now I think he was annoyed by that.

I remember an old TV interview w/ Lance back from '90?...in it he is asked about being the next Lemond...he gives some BS answer about how he "doesn't know much about" Lemond, so has no opinion. Talk about having a chip on your shoulder.

I have heard from mutual friends that there is nothing Armstrong hates more then the rapid groupies that stalk him everywhere. He gets paid $150,000 to talk for 15 minutes to bunch of them and hates every minute of it. Can't wait to flee the building and get away from the common folk.

Part of "normal" socialisation is to be empathic. Without that empathic feeling , as apposed to cognitive understanding, then the kinda awarness most socialy well adjusted people have via there feelings is missing.
Ergo they may "sleep like a baby".
Cognitivly being aware in the absance of feeling is just another string to the bow of a sociapaths ability to manipulate without conscience.
