There’s nothing at all wrong with booing riders. It’s an entirely civilized way to show disapproval of the behaviour of people with a public profile or platform.

This could be still quite interesting as not too many sprinting teams will be willing to chase in mountain stages just to see Sagan win.

The situation is not precisely analogous. The 2016 had all other kinds of chaos caused by the organiser. I'm not saying Nibali shouldn't be treated the same, but there are clear differences.

What are the clear differences?

I, amongst others, have ridiculed the short (mountain) stages, but it seems to have been a brutal Tdf so far.

The stage finish was moved down the mountain. There were no barriers in place. The crowds were completely uncontrolled. Race vehicles were all over the place -- far, far more than they were today.

(I think it was the wrong decision then, BTW. I'd have either neutralised the 2016 stage entirely or let the results stand. So I'm not defending it, just saying that it wasn't precisely the same as today.)
