what a disaster!!! :( ...and Pinot......

I don't think any final decision to be made by the Tour management will be correct or fair by no means- because many things could have happened on that descend & the last climb - whether Egan would have widen his advantage to Ala, whether Ala could have managed to reduce the damage, whether KRUIJSWIJK or BUCHMANN had attacked on the Tignes, Whether Movistar had a plan for the last climb....

What if the stage is cancelled all together and the times & rankings in the GC are kept before the start to the stage ?
Alaphilippe would certainly love that.

And Pinot can comeback tomorrow

Now that would be unfair

Provisional result from the Tour website:

1. Egan Bernal
2. Simon Yates, at 5’’
3. Warren Barguil, at 41’’
4. Laurens De Plus, at 50’’
5. Steven Kruijswijk,
6. Geraint Thomas,
7. Emanuel Buchmann,
8. Vincenzo Nibali, all st
9. Richie Porte, at 1’18’’
10. Gregor Mühlberger, st
11. Wout Poels, at 1’50’’
12. Damiano Caruso
13. Alejandro Valverde, all st
14. Julian Alaphilippe, at 2’07’’

Wasn't Landa up there as well? And I didn't notice but was Barguil that close to the Thomas group?

He was 55" seconds behind, he wouldve never closed that gap completely and lost way more minutes than 2 eventually. Alaphilippe got saved by this decision, not the other way around.
Impossible to know that. What if he was just struggling with the altitude at the top of Iseran, but otherwise was feeling pretty good?

He could have gained on the descent and held on the last climb.
no way. he was done. jeez people, just get real ffs, this bandwagon blindness is ridiculous.
Bandwagon, wtf? You have absolutely no idea how the rest of the stage would have unfolded. Claiming Alaphilippe would have lost minutes is completely meaningless; he might have done, he might not have done.

But he absolutely had gained time on the descent before the race was neutralized, so he 100% has been hard done by in that respect.
Neither do you, but statistically the most likely scenario is Ala is better off now, than if the race is finished at the correct point. He might have been gaining a little bit on the Thomas group, but he wasn't gaining much if anything on Bernal.

So no time bonuses - no 10 seconds or 8 seconds for Bernal. Puts him what 45 up on Ala?

37 seconds by my calculation.

Bernal
Ala +37
Thomas +1'23
Kruiswijk +1'35
Buchmann +1'52

*** packet calculations, don't quote me.

Biggest loser seems to be Uran in that case because he definitely wasn't 2'30 back on Egan Bernal.

i know the ASo had no choice
but it's still extremely disappointing

so many things could have still happened
-they could've reduced the gap to bernal in the valley and the last climb
-they could've ridden alaphilippe much more into the distance
-there could've been changes between thomas/kruijswijk/buchmann

all stuff we never got because of this freak landslide. Bernal was the strongest, but i'm not sure he would hold on to 1 full minute advantage. Now the Tour is without tension the last day (for me). Really too bad ... freak weather

Why in the world wouldnt you at least give him the time bonus?? I mean, that doesnt make sense at all.

He's already the main beneficiary of the cancellation, why assist him further?

Worked out for Alaphilippe maybe. See what happens tomorrow. ASO had no choice and cancelling the stage altogether wasn't really viable. Shame it happened but similar things have happened in the Giro with route changes and climbs cancelled. As expected Quintana and Alaphilippe went out the back. Thomas doing as well as expected. Pinot must be very upset. Day of drama but the wrong type. Certainly been an unusual Tour and an interesting one. What happens with the bonuses ? Yates might have been heading for another stage win and was understandably disappointed. Uran was a bit worked up.

Maybe on paper, but trust me, he hates this. Now everybody will question the victory to some extend. And he didnt get the chance to win the stage and TAKE the yellow jersey over Iseran, a legendary climb.

There was bonus on the top. This accident doesnt change that fact.

Orla just said she believes it to be:

Bernal
Alaphilippe +25s
Thomas + 1’06
Kruijswijk + 1’18
Buchmann + 1’45

Bernal's won, Tour's over. What a real, real shame.
Certainly seems a hollow victory. Which isn't particularly fair on Bernal, who may well have won anyway.

Exactly my thoughts. The stage could have been voided and yet Egan could have won it with panache, but it is what it is.... Hope he wins the stage tomorrow....

kind of bittersweet for me as a Colombian to witness the 1st ever compatriot winning the Tour in such unappealing manner....

Landa and Uran were in the Thomas group.

Brailsford said it - you've got to put yourself in the position to win it. If Movistar's leaders were in the race, maybe if Jumbo Visma had chosen someone else to fetch bottles in the crosswinds, if another team had a number two as good as Bernal they could have been up the road today.

The stage has to finish, it didn't so no time bonuses, which is fair given the situation.

5 riders inside 1,42 of yellow, up the last mountain of the tour.

Tomorrow is going to be an epic battle, with 5 guys all thinking they can win the Tour.
Dont think anyone other than Egan is thinking that.
Rest is thinking about podium and I understand them. And that in itself could be very entertaining. Add to that Movistar and we can have ourselves a great stage with Roseland off the bat.
