Maybe Nibali doesn't want Valverde to get too far in front, maybe SKY have stuck with the same pace so some other team has to come and do some work to bring back Valverde. There's more than SKY who want to win this race.

You'd want to keep G around the top of gc as long as possible. He'll crack at some point anyway and as long as he's in front then it makes a difficult dynamic for Froome to attack.
