Venturini 2nd.
Wouters 3rd.

Jérôme Cousin new race leader.

Not a very generous way to begin your season.

^ That seems to be very thick field of riders at the finish line which is quite rare nowadays. No lead-out trains and everyone sprinting for themselves?
Yeah, that was quite a bizarre sprint. Bonifazio hit the front very early after the last roundabout at 500m to go, Vital Concept were nowhere to be seen as well. Cofidis was the most cohesive team though.

Happy to see Wouters mix it up with the big bois finally :)

I can't recall Langeveld doing this well at this point of the year.

Looking forward to what EF can do on the cobbles with him, Vanmarcke, Modolo, Bettiol and Phinney.

And it seems the whole EF team have improved TT-wise this year. Maybe it's the sponsorship stability they didn't have for years but now they do.

La Vuelta a Murcia starts tomorrow and for the first time in about a decade it will be a stage race again instead of a one day race. Granted it will only have two stages, but they were able to get the funding to expand it to a two race for this year. Also they have said this is the first time in the history of the race that they will have the reigning World Champion racing it.

I'm not certain it's a good thing that it's two days.

The last two editions have been epic but that kind of long distance action is usually pretty rare in smaller stage races. On the other hand, the second stage seems like the usual one day race so maybe it will be raced properly.

Yes, the 2nd stage is the same as the 1 day race has been for the past several years. Their goal is to get this race back to eventually being the 4-5 day stage race is used to be.

The second stage isn't the same as the one day race has been for the last few years. It starts and finishes in the same places and climbs the Collado Bermejo but the route is completely different in between. Since becoming one day in 2013 they have tried to mix up the route quite a bit with the only constant being the Bermejo climb which gives the Cima Marco Pantani prize. Nairo Quintana won the 2 day race in 2012 , with a time trial providing the second stage, and Conrador the 3 day race the previous year( subsequently taken off him as part of his ban I believe), 2010 was a 5 day race won by Rabón - what happened to him? It had been 5 days for quite a while before then I think with some years being 6 days.

Langeveld often did well in february races. In the past that was usually Mallorca and other spanish races were he finished top 10 in hilly stages and stuff. It's really not new.
And he did some good dutch ITT championships in the past as well.

Thanks to the EF sponsoring they got financial stability and can invest money into things like aero tests, windtunnels, nutrition etc. All things that have to be cut to a certain level if you're operating on a limited budget.

The last time Langeveld had any top10 results in February, be it one-day races, stages or stage races overall placings, was in 2011.
