Yes 16 minutes to the peloton. Basically the only riders who have any chance to win the overall or podium tomorrow were in the break. The looks are that no one in the peloton cared.
Apparently the course was dangerous - according to Trentin - perhaps is was a protest, [Paywall after headlines]

Unlikely. According to several friends who were on the side of the road watching today, today's race was ridden much slower than Valverde's normal group training rides over these exact same roads. Several of the guys are some of those training ride partners who were stunned at how slow they were riding. They even said if they'd the peloton had no interest in racing today they'd have not bothered and done other stuff today that they could have done instead. Several are considering not bothering tomorrow after what they saw today. They figure they can find things that need done at home and put their time to better use. That's not a good sign.

This was the finish line. Had the peloton been bothered, it would have been an absolute trainwreck.

It'll be a surprise if they have good crowds tomorrow after today's debacle. The peloton didn't care today, so why should the fans care tomorrow.
There were some safety issues, not only concerning the finish (which going by the picture looks incredibly dangerous) but also on some downhill parts.

I don't know if this is the only reason why the gap grew so big, but it likely played a part.

Well when the crowds don't show up tomorrow because they all decided they have better things to, that is on the riders and they have no one to blame but themselves. I've heard from many of my friends who had planned on going tomorrow who now have said they have things that need done at home which will be a much better use of their time. The reality at this point is it doesn't matter why it happen, but the fans who live there aren't seeing any good reason to show up tomorrow. The riders didn't want to race today, then they had better not expect the fans to show up tomorrow.

I don't understand. The 4 World Teams and most of the bigger Pro Teams had riders in the break. Who would you expect to lead the chase? Gazprom-RusVelo and Wallonie-Bruxelles?

You don't expect them to lose 16 minutes and literally hand the entire race to the break regardless of the make up of the break. Literally the peloton told the fans today we aren't interested in racing. Basically they told the fans don't bother coming out tomorrow because the race is over today. There is no reason at all to care about tomorrow's stage at all. The top 10 are very likely going to be the top 10 regardless of who wins the stage because no one is bringing back that kind of time. You also don't expect the peloton to race at a much SLOWER pace than normal training rides are either.

According to Juanjo Lobato there was nothing wrong with the roads and that the non Spaniards just didn't like them. My take from what Juanjo says here is that many riders in the peloton (many non Spaniards) were looking for an excuse to not race. That is disgraceful.

The non-Spaniards didn't like the roads ?
Ya cause those Belgian teams are real picky when it comes to a good road surface

Well there were non Spanish riders complaining about the roads and basically forcing the peloton to not race and we have Spaniards refusing to allow them to get away with their comments. I haven't seen something like this before when you have some riders complaining about road conditions and then you get others calling them hypocrites for complaining. This is a first. I do wonder if this race will become much more picky about which teams are invited to prevent this disgrace that happened today. It sounds like we had riders who just didn't want to race and are using "bad road conditions" as an excuse and are being called out on it.

Trenting was also complaining about the finish. Here a video , do you you know if it was near the finish line, still cars and motos on the road with the riders View: https://twitter.com/ammattipyoraily/status/1228416589374029825?s=20

Well you can see the breakaway still together with the poor Euskadi rider who finished at 50 seconds dropping his chain so you can assume this was before the finish line but not immediately rather like last 1 or 2 km or so.
Quite spectacular streets if you ask me.

Looks like these people only turn up if Valverde/Sanchez/other local hero has a chance of winning.

Not sure if cycling really needs 'fans' like these.

Murcia's always one of the stranger races on the calendar. Isn't this the race Valverde won by several minutes after a 100km solo attack? And the year after he just stopped riding so that Sanchez could have the win

I doubt these riders would bother lying about the road to not cycle. If they didn't want to race they would just have a bad day and drop out the back. As usual you are blindly taking the Spanish side

Ok, Murcia is definitely weird racing. Nice group in the final of the second stage, but what some guys did, or better did not ... CCC threw away an almost certain victory although Trentin had Cerny there. Valverde didn't seem interested at all too.

LL Sanchez gets the stage win, Meurisse was involved in front too and achieves the overall.
