Apparently the course was dangerous - according to Trentin - perhaps is was a protest, [Paywall after headlines]Yes 16 minutes to the peloton. Basically the only riders who have any chance to win the overall or podium tomorrow were in the break. The looks are that no one in the peloton cared.

Trentin si rivolge all'Uci: "A Murcia non c'era sicurezza"
Il trentino della CCC su twitter parla direttamente al numero uno dell'Uci: "La discesa non era per niente sicura e l’arrivo una follia"www.gazzetta.it
There were some safety issues, not only concerning the finish (which going by the picture looks incredibly dangerous) but also on some downhill parts. It'll be a surprise if they have good crowds tomorrow after today's debacle. The peloton didn't care today, so why should the fans care tomorrow.
This was the finish line. Had the peloton been bothered, it would have been an absolute trainwreck.

I don't know if this is the only reason why the gap grew so big, but it likely played a part.
I don't understand. The 4 World Teams and most of the bigger Pro Teams had riders in the break. Who would you expect to lead the chase? Gazprom-RusVelo and Wallonie-Bruxelles?
Anyone heard anything about Mas's DNF?
The non-Spaniards didn't like the roads ?According to Juanjo Lobato there was nothing wrong with the roads and that the non Spaniards just didn't like them. My take from what Juanjo says here is that many riders in the peloton (many non Spaniards) were looking for an excuse to not race. That is disgraceful.

Ya cause those Belgian teams are real picky when it comes to a good road surface
Trenting was also complaining about the finish. Here a video , do you you know if it was near the finish line, still cars and motos on the road with the riders View: https://twitter.com/ammattipyoraily/status/1228416589374029825?s=20
Well when the crowds don't show up tomorrow because they all decided they have better things to, that is on the riders and they have no one to blame but themselves. I've heard from many of my friends who had planned on going tomorrow who now have said they have things that need done at home which will be a much better use of their time. The reality at this point is it doesn't matter why it happen, but the fans who live there aren't seeing any good reason to show up tomorrow. The riders didn't want to race today, then they had better not expect the fans to show up tomorrow.
Johan Le Bon wins the new 1.1-race in Malaysia following the Tour of Langkawi. Once a nice talent at FDJ, with good performances on Flemish roads and more than decent time trials.
I doubt these riders would bother lying about the road to not cycle. If they didn't want to race they would just have a bad day and drop out the back. As usual you are blindly taking the Spanish sideWell there were non Spanish riders complaining about the roads and basically forcing the peloton to not race and we have Spaniards refusing to allow them to get away with their comments. I haven't seen something like this before when you have some riders complaining about road conditions and then you get others calling them hypocrites for complaining. This is a first. I do wonder if this race will become much more picky about which teams are invited to prevent this disgrace that happened today. It sounds like we had riders who just didn't want to race and are using "bad road conditions" as an excuse and are being called out on it.
