Ackermann got boxed in by his own teammate. Bennett's selfishness cost Bora a good chance of victory on home soil. I doubt that stupid move favors the Irishmans position on the team for next year!

Nice win for Walscheid though. That one came as a surprise.
Selfishness? They are sprinters. That’s their job. Unless one is ordered not to sprint, they will both try to win. If Bennett is allowed to sprint it’s not his problem to worry about Ackermann’s positioning. If Ackermann is allowed to sprint, it’s not his problem that the guy he is trying to barge through is his teammate. That’s why you don’t put two sprinters in the squad unless one is a lead out (and neither of them has any experience at that).
Which I doubt Bora's gonna do again after it ruined them a race that was in full control the whole day. Hence, why I talked about Bennett's position in the team, which might be downgraded to sprinter no. 3. Ackermann is the team's new starlet and seen as potential successor of Greipel in Germany. So he probably ends up with team leadership at the 2019 Giro d'Italia to rest himself against Viviani!

And that makes complete sense ;)
Giro: Ackermann
Tour: Sagan
Vuelta: Bennett

We agree that two sprinters on the same squad is a bad idea. What I disagreed with was your remark about Bennett’s “selfishness” being to blame. I’ve seen people on twitter taking the other side and blaming Ackermann for barging into Bennett. Both attitudes rest more or less on an assumption that one should be riding for the other, when in fact neither has any reason to ride for the other. Neither is a lead out. Both have good reasons to believe that they are in the top tier of sprinters. Both are on a team where Sagan gets the first pick of races already. Of course neither is going to abandon his sprint because the other guy is boxed in or in the way. So you don’t put them in the same team.

As for next year, it’s going to get messy. Bennett is the incumbent no 2 on the team and stepped forward again this year, winning multiple Giro stages and being probably the fastest sprinter there. But hes been out since winning Koln in June. Meanwhile Ackermann has been winning loads of races. Ultimately I think it will come down to certain pragmatic issues: Ackermann has two years on his contract, Bennett just one. Ackermann is potentially more helpful to the (German) sponsors. Ackermann is younger and yet to ride a GT, so more likely to continue accepting Sagan’s leftovers for longer. So Bennett is most likely to be squeezed next year and then to leave, which is sad as he and the team essentially developed together from their PCT days. Mind you, I think Ackermann will be out too once his contract ends. Sagan is there for the long haul and a top tier sprinter will not permanently accept no Tour and no MSR.

Bora are victims of their own sprinting success. They need a 2017 level Bennett and Ackermann as number 2 and 3. Instead they have the 2018 models both of whom know they would lead most other teams.

Bennett should have asked permission to leave the team after this season. Three world class sprinters is just too much and he is the one who will be squeezed.

Is the Sparkassen Münsterland race pan flat with serious crosswinds every year? It feels like it's always won from a small group, but there are always some very non-durable sprinters in the mix.

They've got some little bumps here in the Münsterland in the Baumberge, the area around Dülmen, where the Tower Barracks were located. Then, there are the foothills of the Teutoburg Forest in the Tecklenburger Land, close to Osnabrück Garrison, which are included occasionally as well. These hills often shake up the race a little bit early on. They've also added some more additional country roads in the closing kilometers as well this year. That's it nearly always ends up with a reduced bunch sprint.

This year indeed the group originally split due to crosswinds and mainly stayed away due to the country roads and the Schöppinger Berg. Although Gaviria and Boasson Hage made it back to the front ground in the end, but not without much power investment.

And what the heck is going on with Gaviria?

Bored? Did he not know he was 2.5 km from the finish? Bizarre ... but chapeau Big Max & Sunweb! :)

What were Bora up to though? For a while I thought it would be Bouhanni/Laporte all over again. :D

Nico Denz (AG2R La Mondiale) wins.

He thought there was one lap left but the others began to sprint so he sprinted too. :D

That makes sense otherwise he would deserve a prize for the least excited winner ever :D

Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli 2018 today -
http://www.cyclingnews.com/features...ia-the-final-act-of-the-european-road-season/
A day after the Giro dell'Emilia, the fast men have an opportunity to show their quality in the same part of the world in the GP Bruno Beghelli, which takes place on a rather less demanding course. Starting and finishing in Monteveglio Valsamoggia, the course takes in ten laps of the Zappolini circuit, but with 8km from the final climb to the finish, it is difficult for late attackers to stay clear alone.

Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) won last year's race and returns this season, while Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida), Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) are among the fast men with an eye on victory.
