I haven’t seen the race yet, but the late crash sounds awful. Hopefully all involved are ok.

Philipsen rode the fastest sprint, but he had to come from too far behind. It was a very nervous final, with a big crash. So obviously not a "normal" finish.

Indeed. It were the riders in front of him that got dropped and he constantly had to close the gaps. The goal of him riding in a race like this, was exactly that: to get a hang of a nervous race with lots of twisting and turning. Mission accomplished i think, especially as he had done his job for the team in front of the peloton by then.

Luckily looks like MVP will be fine - no fractures according to C-C FB page:

Nokere Koerse didn’t end as we expected. A nasty crash for Mathieu van der Poel in the final straight line and afterwards they took him away with the ambulance to the hospital. Luckily, no fractures has been determined. Only abrasions and bruises. With these circumstances, he will be able to complete his road program as planned.

Walscheid was clipped by the guys going past him, no chance for him. In such a narrow finish that can happen and if MVDP wanted to be out of that danger he should haven been more upfront.

Also Ackermann was just a bit too early. He isn't out of shape. Where do you get that from? Him and Selig are a bit notorious for getting it a bit early.

Perhaps overconfidence, thinking that in the absence of his high level peers that he could just blow everyone away. Conversely, perhaps he’s feeling a bit of pressure and was trying a bit too hard to force a win. He has after all never really been under any pressure to perform before: when he went on his hot streak in the second half of last season, he was a development project, the third and youngest sprinter on a team where both of those ahead of him were doing well. Now he’s a big gun, regular wins are expected, he’s been picked ahead of a guy who is winning a lot for the Giro.

Either way, I don’t think it’s physical. He’s fast. He says he has good form. The wins will come. He will be in top condition for the Giro (and he may not even need to be if no other top tier guys are there).

Very limited sprinting field for this one. DQS are actually providing two of the three properly fast guys in the race, with both Hideg and Jakobsen in their lineup for some reason. After them and Ackermann, there is Mareczko I suppose and then we are talking about guys like Blythe.

I'm assuming that may have something to do with Jakobsen not getting ready for Nokere Koerse and maybe still not 100% fit today. I'm just speculating (and i'm too lazy to look it up) that maybe they would otherwise have sent Hodeg to Handzame and Jakobsen to Nokere.

Also remarkable that UAE is sending the just turned 21 year old Philipsen to Milan San Remo instead of here.

What an idiot. Either he stays in Keise's wheel, or he gives him the gap and profits from other teams having to close the gap. Now he does neither, and he can't even sprint for ***. :lol:
