Not a very strong field but I really like the fact that José Gonçalves has some stage race / one day races (Polynormande win this year) talent instead of being a one dimensional TT rider like Nelson Oliveira has shown this last years (despite some decent showings here and there). A while ago I designed a Tour of Almaty in the Race Design thread, saying Kazakhstan has given far too much to cycling in recent years to have no UCI races. Mine was a stage race, however now we have a one-day race there!

The course isn't all that exciting - just an out-and-back on a dual carriageway rolling through the southern edge of the city, on the lower edge of the Tian Shan Mountains. No HC climb up to Shymbulak here, instead this is purely rolling, 5 laps of a 31km circuit. It was originally scheduled to be 6, not sure why only 5 in the end. A pretty useful field given the status (1.2), with 3 Pro-Continental teams, 12 Continental teams including some fairly well known ones, 3 national teams including the home team with several World Tour riders, and two wildcard amateur teams - a Dutch Global Cycling Project team, and popular folk hero Alexandre Vinokourov's amateur squad, amazingly named "Team Vino 4 Ever", and the fans got to celebrate a popular local win - if unsurprising. The biggest surprise was that he wasn't in Lombardia I guess, but maybe the home win is more important to the sponsors.

What big races? He's not a climber/stage racer and doesn't seem to have the stamina for monuments. Random 1.1 races are pretty much his forte. If he goes for uphill/reduced sprints in the best races he has to compete with the likes of Sagan, Gerrans, Valverde, Moreno, Purito. He has had plenty of opportunity in the biggest races but is yet to have a real breakthrough, that may yet come.

Indeed. He manages to win every sh.t small race in Italy, but he just can't handle the distance of a real classic yet. And before every one of them he's talked up as a contender.

well, there is a time for everything. I like to see him move up in the hierarchy on Lampre. And I'm not buying the lack of stamina, I mean the guy is only 24.

You're inventing barriers, the whole "team leadership" thing gets thrown around far too frequently. Riders who are good enough to win races generally do so regardless of the team situation. Not being the recognised #1 on the team does not mean they are wasting energy for someone else or not receiving opportunities. Where Ulissi has sacrificed a top result working for an inferior teammate? When he is good enough he will get results at the next level, it's as simple as that.

I reckon Nibbles showed GT type recovery earlier in his career.
I'm not ruling out Ulissi being a GT rider in the future, but sure there's little evidence he will develop into one right now.
