Tour d'Alsace stage 2
1 IGNATIEV DmitriyItera - Katusha3:50:24
2 DUYN HuubCyclingteam de Rijke,,
3 THEVENOT Guillaume,,
4 LAUBER Edouard,,
5 BORGERSEN Reidar BohlinTeam Joker ,,
6 WALSLEBEN PhilippBKCP - Powerplus 0:06
7 VAN DER POEL MathieuBKCP - Powerplus,,
8 CALMEJANE Lilian,,
9 SPOKES SamuelEtixx,,
10 MENUT David,,

Today's stage saw another break taking the win. There were two big hills in the first half, where Van Der Poel, Eiking, Lindeman, Di Gregorio among others were in the attack. After the difficult first part there followed a circuit with a 4th cat climb. In the end it came back together and there were some other attacks and a five man group made it till the end.

Tomorrow's stage will be more relevant for the GC. It also has a finishing circuit, but this one has a 2nd cat climb on it, the top of the last time they climb it being only a few km from the finish.

25 riders DNF/OTL'd today, so the first couple of climbs did some damage.

Going with Hirt tomorrow.

Mathieu van der Poel won. Another win for the Dutchman with the Flemish accent and French blood.

Very modern.

I couldn't follow the stage today because I was away most of the day. But I just came home and was glad to see that Van Der Poel has won. :)

Tomorrow will be more difficult though, who knows what he can do tomorrow.

Highlights on France 3 Alsace

Lovely to see how Mathieu speaks close to perfect/flawless French. :)

(I know other people with dual background who don't speak as well as him)

(actually I know 100% French people who don't speak French as well as him :D)

No, I haven't seen anything related to cycling since the nats lol (or well the cobble stage ).

But Poulidor is talking about his two grand-children in one of his books that I have "Poulidor intime". He says that every winter - around Christmas - he usually goes to Belgium where his daughter Corinne lives with Adrie and then visits some cyclocrosses in Belgium and in the Netherlands. He's telling his readers that there, cyclocross is considered true competition, with an attendance of 15,000 people. Even his other daughter would join in, with her daughter, Coralie, Mathieu's cousin :)D).

The year he wrote the book, Mathieu was Dutch cyclocross champion in the novice category and Raymond attended it. He received the national jersey and a medal. And Poulidor proudly added that "his brother David was just as proud as if he got the title, himself." :)

What I still can't understand is that the book was published in 2007 and I can see no report that Mathieu had won the title in the novice category in 2007. As far as I can tell, he won his first title in 2010. Mystery! :D

Also I think that Mathieu and David nicknamed their grandpa "Opou", pun with "opa" (Dutch for "grandpa"). I think Wuyts once said that during a cyclocross.

Thanks for the link!

So I saw that yesterday on the Grand Ballon Mathieu did okay. I'm glad to see he's actually still climbing pretty good and he even said on twitter he had a bad day.

Czechs doing pretty good in this race with Hirt and especially Hnik. Also nice to see Jack Haig up there after his good start of the season in Australia. Furthermore I expected a bit more from Herklotz, but I'm especially disappointed with Eiking. I don't know Eiking too well, but he was good in Aosta not to long ago, so I thought he would do well here too.

Crossers have always done well in Alsace. I remember Niels winning stages a few years back, over the Ballons and I think Petrus won the overall (wrong?).

Has Hnik really stopped cross? I still remember him at Fidea. :(

Herklotz is a good crosser too. And nice to see Lars up there. :)

Herklotz has been quite disappointing this year. He had some good rides in Bavaria and Luxembourg and he also won an Italian u23 race in the spring, but apart from these results he has been really bad.

Herklotz starting the season with health issues, which were over in april when he started riding really strong. After the Tour de Luxembourg he has also disappointed me as my expectations were high, but saying he has been really bad is way to harsh.
