I hoped that Global 6 would bring the Ethiopian lightweight climber Hailemichel, but nope.
Maybe Sayar will go vintage Sayar and challenge Quintana ;)

Jorge Soto escaped in the last kilometre on what was expected to be a slightly uphill sprint in Vergara on stage 3 of the Vuelta del Uruguay, stealing a couple of seconds ahead of the Dominican Alberto Ramos and Fernando Méndez. The main controversy was that race leader Ignacio Maldonado crashed at almost exactly the 3km to go banner, and lost the leader's jersey as a result as he was penalised time; the race was on since there were, you know, 3km to go, and the bunch was heavily reduced; his team argued that the crash was within the 3km to go so he should be given the same time as the bunch, if not Soto, but the original decision was upheld, meaning Agustín Alonso acquires the yellow jersey ahead of today's double-stage where he will hope to extend his lead with the 8km ITT.

I posted yesterday that Philipsen and Groves showed more speed than Ewan in stage one - Ewan will get better with more racing.

He fell on his shoulder but knowing he still came in 1'44 behind there's definitely a chance he's allright. If he's fit this might make Wednesday pretty interesting. The best placed GC riders right now are guys like Colleoni and Johannessen. Vandenabeele and Vanhoucke are 21" down. Definitely possible for Nairoman if he's not hurt ofcourse. Prime Vanhoucke could be a problem but he hasn't shown good form since Catalunya 2021. Colleoni and Vandenabeele have showed decent form this year and Johannessen was good here last year. I probably forget some other guys too.

Edit: Jay Vine is also in it. Only 5" behind Colleoni and Johannessen. He might be the favorite actually.

Stage 7 over in Vietnam and it was one that more closely resembled a European style flat stage, with a break established of relatively unthreatening names in the GC, hoovering up the intermediate sprint bonuses and putting up with wet roads and headwinds, even if it was somewhat larger than we might ordinarily see in a stage race sprint stage. However, a classic feature of the HTV Cup is the use of wide inter-urban roads, rather than those courses we're used to in the Netherlands and Belgium where the course designer plans the route by throwing a plate of spaghetti at a relief map of the area, so getting out of sight and out of mind is a lot more difficult. In addition to this, we have a new leader in the race in Quàng Văn Cường, and his Lộc Trời team are much keener to take this to a sprint than Vinama had been, seeing as they have three different stage winners from sprints on their team and it is where they hope to make their GC gains.

Nguyễn Trúc Xinh of NewGroup was probably the most threatening name in the group, but there were a few riders within a minute still, so TLT were holding the group at arm's length to ensure they could bring them back later. In another parallel to European racing, there was a brief skirmish over who got to be the last one taken back, with Phan Thanh Tấn Tài of the 620 Châu Thới-Vĩnh Long team (the ones in knock-off Groupama-FDJ jerseys) winning that battle but being taken back with 4km remaining. In the end, however, 22-year-old baroudeur of two years ago turned sprint threat of today, Trần Tuấn Kiệt, went for a long one and hit the front with almost 300m to go, but just kept on holding his pace and nobody could get around him; in the end he took the stage win, the first for either of the Đồng Tháp teams (Domesco Đồng Tháp aka DDT, and Dopagan) this edition. Sprint specialist Lê Nguyệt Minh took 2nd, and Quàng Văn Cường put a bit more daylight between himself and his GC rivals with 3rd place, taking four bonus seconds with him.

Tomorrow we have a start in the Giro di Sicilia, with Astana and Nibali and Intermarche with Pozzovizo and Meintjes line up along with Trek and Ellisonde to be our three WT team representatives, with those first two focusing on key GC points. Caruso I dare say is the favorite, riding for the Italy national team, with Malucelli racing, still looking for a ride with a team.

There are a few interesting youngsters to follow in Giro di Sicilia: Martin Svrcek (soon a QS rider), Fran Miholjevic, Andrii Ponomar, Alessandro Verre, Alexander Vinokurov, etc

Caruso looked good in both TA and MSR but hasn't ridden in almost a month, so not sure about his shape. Nibali is trying to find his shape after being sick for almost a month. Mimmo Pozzovivo might even be the favorite considering how consistent he's been this year despite being without a contract until mid February. Alex Cepeda is my wild card, he was very good last year in April.

Caruso is the main favorite but there's always the Vino option who started the race together with the Nibs option. Anyway, beautiful scenery today:

It would be really nice to see Pozzzo taking a win. But just as Vincenzo, it is also Damiano's home race, and he skipped Itzulia to have a fresh form here

Nice 3rd place there for the spainish guy Fernandez.

Bennett again dissapointing. And Philipsen somehow won despite half his leadout going down in a crash

Bennett had the wheel of Groves, but then Philipsen made his move and boxed him in, so he never got to sprint. That was unlucky, but at least he tried unlike Ewan.
