Bob Roll

I think during the Swiss tour (?) on several occasions he said how the INERTIA of the group would carry it along. Of course he ment the opposite of inertia, MOMENTUM. Just like whenever I think how smart PnPnB are I am really thinking how stupid they are.

both P&P stating several times it wasnt boonen on the ground (cause they couldnt see his bands) - but you could clearly see it was him... you cant mistake those ears!

The most hilarious part of that whole episode is that the camera never left Tom, whom they had already identified, earlier on! It just swung from a mid road, back shot of Tomke. Around him, to a roadside, frontal view of him. Were they busy admiring each other in the broadcast booth? I still crack up when I think about that whole call!:D

Since when has inertia been the opposite of momentum?
Here is one definition of inertia:
a. the property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force.

I saw that too and it so funny it turned sad. Ligget was correct right from the start, but then Paul had him doubting himself and he also doubted himself over the stupid bands on the jersey. The thing i notice about the 2 of them is that despite that Paul was a pro cyclist and Phil is 'just' an announcer, Paul really says a lot of stupid things. Phil says weird, 'funny', odd things and just makes faux pas after faux pas, but when you measure his cycling knowledge against Paul's, I would take Phil any day.

none of phil and paul's occasional malapropisms are in the same galaxy as bob roll's persistent abuse of the spoken word. every time i hear him say 'edvaldo bo-hassen-hagen' i want to tear my hair out by the roots.

And did you catch's Phil's excuse for not recognizing Boonen? "He looks quite the different boy with that haircut!"

These are indeed "desperate moments"--in the commentary box.

The one from today, stage 6, that made me laugh at the visual I had in my head after hearing it was:

The riders are adjusting their "riding capes" kept saying this around the time of the feed zone. I picture riders unleashing superman type capes from the pocket in their jersey as they sprint across the line..a bright yellow cape as the yellow jersey crosses the line in Paris! LA had one that said Livestrong!

I have heard them called rain jackets, rain gear, foul weather jumpers, wind jackets.. Never riding capes.

I googled it at work, slow day if I can watch tape and google riding cape. The top response is gear for knights! Perhaps P and P have spent too much time in the chateau and castles Paul seems to enjoy talking about....:)

Sherwen has been fixated by wind this year:

everyone is getting absolutely battered by this crosswind… the peleton is taking a battering… in this wind they will be buffeted…

I wish I could speak French too Paul
'"Bienvenue a Bretagne"… that is welcome to Brittany'

Barring Phil's "undulations" and "battle royales" I think sherwen is running away with the yellow jersey of inanity

Viewed on a replay, after I'd gone out for a short ride, just after the stage start.
As Tom Boonen sat on the ground after his crash, and had already been identified by the dynamic duo. Once he had his helmet removed, he became unrecognizable to the duo. And Sherwen started repeating that if it were Boonen that we were looking at, he should be recognizable by the world champion stripes on his sleeves. Meanwhile, it was plain to see the world champion strip that was on his sleeves.

I'm not sure of their AV setup at the Tour, but I remember seeing their 'desk' in the past and being surprised they don't have nearly as good a visual to go by as most of us would have in our living rooms these days.

I tend to cut them a little slack for that reason. Usually I can see what's going on fine anyway so it's no big deal if they get something wrong. Listening to them on the radio would be a little more disconcerting

watching a DVR'd replay...found a Paulie...at mile 67, when talking about the teams of the sprinters.

"They all take risks to stay at the front end of the spear of the peloton. The spear of lycra I suppose we have to call it."

Phil responds-- "yeah indeed you do..."

Really Paul, really?! A spear of lycra....hummm...that visual with what I read on Cav's twitter account a couple days ago about Gilbert's 13 inches.

I remember why I like cycling.;);)

i love phil and pauls commentary, sherwinisms are definately just as good

Phil said in the stage 1 sprint "its cancellara beating cancellara!"

i love the way Paul describes nasty injuries such as last year he said "and it was on that particular stage that his knee literally exploded."

To top it off, according to them at the end of the broadcast he gained no time. So I think Andy and all the other GC's were with him.

It wasn't until I read the forum that I found out Andy lost time. IMO Phil or Paul should have said that Andy lost time or that AC gained time on Andy...I know shame on me for expecting more from them. I learned I need video when they are calling the finish.

It's a few days back now, but he actually said Contador's photo finish 2nd place was a 'defeat' - after he put 8 sec into Andy. 8 sec is hardly earth-shaking, of course, but it was an odd sort of defeat.

That Contador isn't attacking on flat stages hardly seems like proof he is cooked, but P&P really don't like AC.

An Ode to Phil and Paul

These heads of state of cycling commentary do a job of work turning themselves inside out to bring us the latest on Lance and RoadId. And should the Peloton explode at both ends like a water bottle with too much mold but two lids – what will they think of next? - they will go into the red zone to reel everything back in. They dance on the spear of lycra during a long day in the saddle.

Done and Dusted!

Hey, but seriously, look on the bright side – we could be stuck with the CyclingNews podcast juvenile delinquents.

The Other day...during stage 5, I think...they played an interview with Farrar done earlier...F. said most likely he and the team were going to focus on stage wins rather than the green jersey....to which Phil then responded by saying he found that a good strategy as people only remember stage winners while noone really remembers who wins the green jersey!

Stage 7...onscreen the helicopter is showing one of the typical castle/villa shots..Paul reads out the info of it's history ect..."this was renovated by the marquis so and so in the 17th century and he was known for his love of fine lace and officiating the local village boar wrestling contests ect"...Phil then says "Paul you told me this morning that we wouldn't be seeing any castles in today's stage..." and Paul says "actually, Phil, I told you the exact opposite...this region is loaded with them..."

you get the feeling that Paul is sorta Phil's care taker on tour these days...probably has to keep him from wandering off without his road id and gets him ready in the mornings to go down to the commentary box...

A couple of days ago Phil informed us that Chavanel was struggling because he had 'crashed quite hardly' the day before.

Today they have predicted Millar to outclimb Evans and take yellow.
