From stage 17 when Johnathon Hivert crashed the first time on the descent (not the driveway crash). Phil Liggett said:

"It looks like Olano went down"

I nearly peed myself laughing.......Seriously i know commentators have a hard time identifying riders at times but calling him Olano.

(I also double checked this because SBS replayed the last 15km so they could use all their allocated time in their timeslot)

Paul did his tire pressure-BS again today. But the day's favorite from Phil: "After 16 stages of racing even I can recognize the riders". Good to see he has some self-insight

haha I will have to listen for this tonight!

I watched the last 15k this morning at my local coffee joint, sat next to a Brit who leaned over and asked me who Bob Roll was (pointed at him and said 'that guy').
I laughed and explained yes, he was a racer in a previous life. It turns out this fellow was entertained by P, P commentary and said he enjoyed their comments.

Well, it is becoming a new game to listen for zingers! :)

oh, think I heard 'heads of state' at least twice..:D

A Sherwenism rather than a Liggetism today He was talking about EBH and his value to Sky and said

"He really will be a crown in their jewel over the coming years"

I was going to post this one when I heard it live, but hearing it sucked the entire life out of me, i didn't even have the energy to sit down at my computer and type it out.

If only there was another HD channel that showed Le Tour in the US.

I read some blog a few days ago about watching the TDF and underneath somebody had written that Paul Sherwin and Phil Ligget are the best announcers in sport.

Such a shame they are seen this way by most people that watch them.

Totally appalling, as was the context in which he said it, which was a discussion of who could win the Tour, based on yesterday's stage, and Phil said he didn't think Andy could do it. Then he hastened to add, "Now, I get a lot of letters saying, 'You don't like Andy Schleck.' Well, I do like him. I am a great admirer of his. He's the people's champion," blah-blah-blah. I thought, who is he talking about, Andy Schleck or Princess Diana? Probably some of these "letters" were based on his and Paul's "spat" last year over Chaingate, when Phil came to Alberto's defense, which Paul didn't like one bit. That became extremely awkward, so I was sort of surprised that they seemed to have patched things up this year, because I thought at the time that the dynamic duo might be done for.

phill doesn't seem to hate contador nearly as much as paul does. the way he(paul) says "alberto contador" is enough realize how much he hates him

He has said that on at least 2 days that I noticed. He also said it coming into the sprint with Thor the other day

I laughed too - he really has become the Murray Walker of cycling commentary: "The car in front is unique! except for the car following it which is identical"

The other one from last night doesn't really qualify as a "Ligettism" but it was a funny piece of commentators curse.

Did anyone hear Phil say, "Voeckler is truly a World class descender!" at the precise moment that Tommy overcooked the upper right hand corner and had to pull a foot to not end up down that tree-d embankment?

So typically I normally comment (the usual lurker) so I apologize if I mess up this post in advance. Also, too stupid to see if this has already been posted, BUT PL on Jelle's win on stage 14: 'He's never won a professional cycling event since he's turned professional'

Okay, I know he's gotta comment on the spur of the moment, but how the hell could he win a pro event without being one?

Note solely a "Liggettism", but I really got tired of Phil and Paul incessantly commenting on Frank Schleck "marking" contador, especially in the last 10K.

Frank on Alberto's wheel served absolutely no purpose. At that point in the stage, it was every man for himself (as Cadel had already realized and resigned himself to). It's on a climb as well, so regardless of whether Contador had legs to go or not, Frank sitting on his wheel would make no difference.

With Andy up the road, THAT is where the race was. There is zero chance that Contador cares who's sitting on his wheel. Had he had the legs, he would have gone after Andy. Frank's presence wouldn't affect that, or prevent Contador from going.

Dragging Frank up to Andy, had he (Contador) actually had the legs to do it, would have been inconsequential.

Confused - and this probably should go in another thread.... but you realise that Frank had done nothing all day and wasn't straining at all when on camera? Meaning that if Contador OR anyone else had got back to Andy, Frank WOULD have been able to jump them and take time?

My point was that Frank was fixated on Contador and Contador alone, even to the point of sitting on his wheel when he drifted to the very back of the group.

If Frank intended to sit on any attack that went, possibly capitalizing and gaining time, then he should have been equally focussed on Evans as well. Certainly he should have been fresh having done no work, but sitting on Contador's wheel regardless of position, doesn't afford him any opportunity to cover any other attacks that might go, especially those much closer to him on GC.

Bob roll this morning in stage review of stage 18--Andy Schleck smiles like an angel and fights like a crocodile. Ok but Bob are their crocs in Luxembourg? Australia has crocs... Cadel is Australian... Does he fight like a croc?
