Still, going solo with 50+ to go against a relatively big group was never going to work and he or the team car should have understood that.
ya i also agree with this you can see on the race thread that i said nibali should sit up as soon as he reached the top of the ghisallo he had cracked gilbert who had went into the red to try to keep up so he had a very good chance of getting away on the final climb. i highly doubt zaugg would have won this one if nibali played it a bit smarter. which is strange imo as he usually reads a race pretty well and failed miserably today, jens_attack also reported that there was headwind on the flat which was another reason to sit up.
