Not trying to be disrespectful to the swimming fans, but just how many Olympic swimming events are there? Is every possible combination of [gender] x [100,200,400m] x [4 strokes + meddle] x [single or relay] in the Olympics? It's all I see on Eurosport these days!

agree!!

as a proud orstrayan who's country has only ever been competitive on the medal tally because of swimming, i whole heartedly agree with you.

swimming bores me to tears and unfortunately while it's the swimming week of the games it's pretty much all we see on telly here.

pre-race introductions, the race, then then the scripted by the numbers post race interviews.

then repeats of the above, all while there are way more interesting events happening

instead we get swimming swimming and more swimming.

and if one of them wins gold, we're forced to endure 4 years of them in breakfast cereal ads or lifestyle TV show hosting.

there's a bunch of events you can cut out, basically anything that's not freestyle should be removed. you don't have athletics putting events in like "running backwards", "100m hop on left leg" "100m hop on right leg"

(don't get me started on race-walking though)

swimming should just be events based on the fastest from A to B.

no "non-optimal stroke" events.

Anyone watching the tennis right now?

Yep. Del Potro hasn't played this well since he won the US Open. Federer completely choked serving for the match though.

Why did Ainslie disrupt the danish guy?

Danish & Dutch guys protested Ainsley on a buoy - Ainsley says he didn't touch it and they were co-ordinating their protests to screw him over. That left him with the choice to either do a penalty turn, or wait until after the race and potentially get disqualified if the judges took 2 words over 1 like they usually do.

So he took the penalty turn, caught up and won anyway, then told the Dane exactly where to stick it.

Next race he dominated, then gave him a little show at the end.

As per Telegraph -

He was still livid by the time he made it back to shore and spoke to reporters. “He and the Dutch guy basically teamed up to claim I hit the mark when I didn’t, which seriously p-----d me off,” said Ainslie who explained that he decided not to wait and risk a protest since he would have been outnumbered two to one in the protest room. Had he lost he might have been disqualified from the race.

“Fortunately I’m old enough and wise enough not to fall for that trick and took the penalty turn,” Ainslie said. “But it has certainly fired me up for the finish and fired me up for tomorrow.” Asked what he said to Hogh-Christensen at the finish, Ainslie added: “I wasn’t happy with what those guys did and told them. That’s racing.

And yes, Swimming is clearly over represented, with its comical combinations of distance, stroke, medley and relay, all of which are won by the same people.

Yes. It´s like they´d do a 8-Day stage race in road cycling. Cav would be at least an 8 time gold medalist by now.

Big joke that swimming (add in the clinic stuff).

anyone see the boxing match between that japanese and azeri? japanese knocked him down 6(!!) times in the last round but the ref never counted and told the azeri to get up

in the end azeri won 22-17, while that was totally impossible. Later AIBA honoured the protest of the Japanese and the Japanese guy won and the Azeri guy got sent home.

Rumour has it that Azerbeidjan payed 9 million dollar to AIBA pre-olympic games in return that 2 azeri would win gold medals.
Lol bribery. Lol boxing. Who can even take that sport seriously anymore?

Video of the match fixing.

I think those badminton players could learn a lot from soccer...
The way they did it here is not the way to do it. A good fix is not easy to detect. This one´s amateurish.

PS: Someone with a link of the complete thrown games?

And here´s a little footage of the fixed boxing fight

Guys it´s a farce, it´s a farce.... so much of the olympic oath, sung by coaches, athlets and refs at the opening day ceremony.

ok...ledecky was awesome...commmentators:she will certainly slow down in the second part lol...to bad she didn't set the new WR...so close
manaudou,a surprise for me

british on the track were just untouchable kind of good.

It was nice to see that among the "greatest athletic moments ever" highlight reel which bbc did, in amongst every gold Britain ever won, a member of the bbc commentary ever won, Jesse Owens and bolt, they found space for hicham el garouj (who isn't even anglophone)

Glad to see i am not the only one who rates hicham.so.highly.

Kromowidjojo, after winning the 100m freestyle with a time almost .4 faster than the nr2, now qualifies for the final of the 50m in a time almost 0.5 faster than the 2nd best.

Competition is nowhere near at the moment. If nothing weird happens she'll pick up her 2nd gold tomorrow :D
