What is wrong with wanting to win considering the large amount of taxpayer dollars that goes into the Games?

You seem to get a lot of commentary from the crowd who don't like sport and ask similar silly questions. It is not that we do not value Gold but when so many athletes who were expected to get Gold or at least place have not done so, questions are asked.

It is bizarre. When New Zealand had three golds and a small number of silvers and bronzes, the Aussies were sulking that were getting beaten by the Kiwis because they only had one gold despite having a ton of silvers and bronzes.

Is this just because he said after the heats "I don't know what to make of this guy" or has he been at it again in the final?

A number of things were said in the final along the lines of "he's never run like this before" "he's a controversial character" "People won't know what to make of this", just < literally saying he cheated. Is there something in his background that's particularly suspect?

I'm not sure I'd call it sulking when it comes to NZ having more gold. That would more likely be a bit of fun. Most Ausssies hate getting beating by NZ at anything, but it's a much more friendly rivalry than with other countries. Aussies generally have bit of a soft spot for NZ, and we do like to see them do well... as long as they're not beating us of course. ;)

In fairness, the way the medal table is organised is by number of Gold, not number of medals, so the Gold count will hold more value to most people than the overall medal count. I don't think Australians will be alone there. Are there any Japanese regulars on here? I just noticed their medals stand at 2 Gold, 13 Silver, 14 Bronze. I'm interested to know how those results are being played out in the Japanese media and how the public are reacting.

The commentators on Foxtel are now talking about "Operation Beat Borat" to get more Gold than Kazakhstan. That stuff just annoys me... I know it's meant to be fun, but it just seems disrespectful to the Kazakh athletes to me.

They basically full on accused him of doping in the semis. It was even brought up in the clinic.
(changes voice to very somber tone)Now, Ive never seen him run this good. Never.

Now thats unusual to see this algierian run, this good

Im not sure what im watching with Machloufi there.

The next day when he lined up for the 800 heats they called him "controversial" as if he had already ****ing failed a drug test:rolleyes:

They again introduced him as controversial in the final and called him "the controversial algerian" throughout the race and made clear they were not talking about the 800m pull out -
"The controversy of that is small compared to the conversations that have been going on about this athlete."

After the win they speculated that everyone in the stadium was "bewildered" by his performance, even that Seb Coe (when there was a camera shot of him) was perplexed.

They kept changing their tone to quite disappointment whenever making any of the comments about Makhloufi.

As a final **** you as soon as the 1500 was finalized and there were images if Sally Pearson they said "well we had a great champion earlier on" reffering to implying that Makhloufi is not:rolleyes:

Waw, what was their reaction to Gatlin's medal then?

There was far too much fawning over Bolt for anyone in this country to notice who else was in the race.

But one cant compare saying something bad about gatlin who has tested positive, to accusing Makhloufi totaly baselessly.

When is Susan stepping in here to warn of the ... word? But then again, this thread would be pretty much dead and we all meet at the clinic for the daily news. Well, when i think of it, it would be easier to follow for me. :D

No.

There is a huge difference between

a) discussing doping - clinic.
b) discussing what people said.

NO ONE here has speculated whether or not the Algerian is actually doping. We are not looking at his times we are not looking at drugs we are not looking at doping history or any of that.

For that, we would go to the clinic.

All that was said was that the bbc commentator accused him, and that that is bang out of order.

Did anyone catch these events?

Men's Gymnastics, High Bar final? That had some of the most spectacular, jaw dropping performances in history! And the judges got it right. I couldn't believe some of the releases and air those guys were getting. Mind boggling.

Women's Water Polo Semifinal: Hungary vs. Spain. Who thought women's water polo could be so savage? Five ejections, two red cards to coaches, numerous other penalties. The underwater cam showed a lot of kicking, grabbing of suits, and very rough play. The Spain vs. USA final should be a doozy.

Synchronized Swimming; notably the Russian women swimming to Goblin's Susperia! Who ever thought synchronized swimming could be wicked cool?

Men's Weightlifting. Well, if you didn't see it...

In the last game between Spain/ America an American pulled the Spaniards' swimsuit half off revealing...

I think Australia should only lose to the USA by a bit in basketball- Lithuania went very well against them. The key to beating the USA in that event is to pass it quickly from player to player as one on one the US are amazing in defence and if they foul make sure it is Kevin Love ( at one stage he had 3/8 free throws in).

From your lips to Susan's ears. :)

Just for the record, there is no real problem with casual mentions of doping. It is just when the doping becomes the total subject, or when direct accusations are made, that it belongs in the Clinic.

I have seen at least one cycling forum do great damage to itself by absolutely forbidding any mention of any aspect of doping outside of their Clinic-equivalent, even banning users arbitrarily for the slightest mention of the subject. Not a good idea, in my book.

Go Anna! Well done Sally as well!

The higher the expectations, the greater the chance of disappointment.

Although the expectations in themselves can be a narcotic, it's not so bad.

We love a failure almost as much as we love a winner, so maybe it doesn't matter.

The qualifying for the Men's Pole Vault was a bit of a joke. The Men seemed to develop a union out there as they were almost holding the officials to ransom if they didn't qualify the number of vaulters into the final.

Being a sports fan first, and an American second, I'd love to see the USA team fall flat on it's face. Not the Australia doesn't have pros, but NBA players don't belong in the Olympics any more than NHL players or professional boxers. Plus, the NBA is filled with a slew of giant egos and selfish play, and we've seen than from the USA and their "best ever, we'll prove it" attitude.

Just watched a little basketball now (FRA-ESP)... It´s terrible.

Not only that the motion of throws is unnatural (i mean it´s ok for women to play this sport), but it´s disgusting that the last minute of play takes like 15 mins in real life. Plus a little touch here or there, and the spain player falls down like the worst soccer divers, pretending he is dying on the field.

So, now all the fans of this sport can clobber me. I have earned it with this post. :D
But i really had to say the truth, b/c it annoyed me to watch this farce...

I mean come on guys, AFIR synchronized swimming is also for women only. There is a reason for it.
