Yes, looks like Meintjes might scrape 10th, although it's not a given, as he will still need to beat De La Cruz in the ITT.

Can't help but think that the team might have got an 8th or 9th if Hirt and Meintjes had been committed to protecting Eiking but that wasn't the plan I guess.

5th in the team competition is quite the result for them though. The three mentioned plus Petilli and Taaramae have all had a great Vuelta, really.

Sad, that's not the way I want to see him.

Despite his reputation after turning pro, I think many were introduced to him when he attacked the peloton to chase Mohoric and Alaphilippe (and rode him off his wheel iirc, didn't he?)

Even those who already knew him were introduced to him that day. I still can't say I know what he looks like. He was getting dangerously close to being noticeable in this race, which was why fate had to intervene to preserve the myth.

A sad end for all of the Intermarche Wanty riders time in the top ten, all with crashes. First Taraamäe, then Eiking and now Meintjes. Not bad for a team to have two riders in red and another clawing his way up into the top ten as the race went considering they were invisible for the first half of the season (pretty impressive considering they have fluro yellow/green helmets bar tape and stripes on their jersey).

He was 7th at the ORR in 2016? This guy should be a spy, no one can find him.

Wanty is so anonymous I haven't even noticed their bar tape was of that text marker colour.

By far his best GT, even if he might end up in almost the exact same spot he has done before, but he's been far more visible, far more memorable, and achieved far more in terms of sponsor airtime, stage results and similar. Didn't think he had it in him, I thought that the interesting version of Meintjes that had developed was in response to him recognising he could no longer "compete" for GC after his setbacks, but he's shown that he's capable of being Guillaume Martin, but at least on this occasion, stronger than any Guillaume Martin we've seen before en route. Credit must be given where it's due here, he's done a lot to counter the perception of him from before this last few weeks.
