Teams & Riders Mark Cavendish Discussion Thread

Looks like Cavendish isn’t keen on fighting for his position anymore, either from fatigue or not wanting to risk anything now. He’s been swamped back into the bunch these last few sprints and if he was on Morkov’s wheel he would have been set up quite well for today. Think stage 13 is his only and last chance for another win.

He ended up in the middle when his two leadout guys moved to the (riders) right side of the pack. As many bodies were crowded around him we can't be certain he even saw that and it was too late to do much by then. As you say; his guys were in position. Not sure he's given up but it's a long way to Paris Nice and there aren't any easy opportunities left.

Only issue with this is that Astana have been taking the right side of the road on almost every sprint stage so it isn’t like it’s something new.

Yeah, yesterday was all about not holding a good position. Part of that is luck of course, but he seems to lack that something in the 2km to 500m phase. And doesn’t seem to want to hold his lead out guys wheel.

Got through the Tour like he wanted to, won a stage, and picked up a new “prize” with the Lanterne Rouge. Overall a successful outing. I think now it’ll just be a farewell, have fun rides during the races till the end of the year and retire. I wonder if he’ll take Vino up on his offer for being coach/management in the team.

Saw him on the way to the Astana after-Tour party/dinner today. He looked quite melancholic/conflicted. I wonder if he‘ll be able to retire now or if he‘s not ready to let go.

Maybe watching Pogačar get 6 wins in this Tour is making him change his mind.

A lot of respect for what Cav did during this Tour though, not only he got the historical 35th stage win after a very tough start but he honoured the race by battling through the mountains and reach Nice. If this is his farewell, its a great one.

I watching at the sprint becouse I couldnt. I dont know if you talk to this at the threath of the stage, but Cavendish didnt go straith to the line... he moved from totally right side to totally left side, didnt left space to overpass him. When I watched with helicopter or dron view, it didnt look so serious, becouse looked quite far from teh finish, but on the frontal view, lot of riders had to stoped to sprint and even a trek rider crashed becouse that move.
The only that could support a victory it that doenst look anybody was going to overpass him, and he looked the strongest, but IMO, to change side at that moment, is not legal and he should have been disqualified.

And I was one of the people who thought he deserved and he has the quality and the shape to do it, but I have to be honest.

Cavendish was 1-2 bike lengths ahead of everyone else, looked before going to make sure he had the room and space, and caused no issues with his move on the aerial view. A solid case can be made against Philipsen following that wheel a moment later.

Yes, I watched again and despite Cavendish moved from one side to the other, really is Phillipsen who moved more suddenly and more to the fences, trying to follow him and caused the crash

Crazy to think, if Pogacar gets 6 wins in every tour he will equal Cav's record in 2027.
But the question will be whether Pogi can continue at this level. There will be times again when his opponents will make it harder for him to win stages. This year there were very many chances, even if he didn't go for it. As a sprinter, it's “easier” to win stages, even when you're not in top form. Pogi will win a few more, but we'll have to wait and see if he can really break the record. Cav also had a few years where he didn't win anything.
