It's still harsh to ban someone (in part) for not having a better command of the English language. Writing in English when you're not fluent is already a huge amount of work; using a spellcheck and correcting every little bit only adds to that.

Not to mention, there's nothing about good spelling in the rules.

The point seems to be that in this case it was deliberately terrible, not just generally poor. I have huge admiration for anyone posting on here whose first language isn't English. I can speak some French, a bit of Croatian but that's about it and I certainly couldn't write in either in an understandable way. However, it is an English language forum, everyone who signs up knows that and is expected to communicate in English. Purposefully writing in poor English, just to annoy a moderator, after they have specifically asked you not to is surely a form of trolling?

Nail. Head. Hit.

(Except I speak a little Spanish instead of Croatian) :D

Well, reading something that's misspelled can be a bit hard when English isn't your first language. So instead of thinking in terms of We should just not care about spelling, because some people aren't first-language speakers." maybe we should instead think in terms of We should take care to spell properly, because some people aren't first-language speakers.

I doubt Taxus's english is as bad as he would like to have people believe. In the clinic when he gets into a direct conversation with posters his English can improve very quickly and then there seems to be a realisation the posts are too well written and suddenly the pidgeon English returns worse than before.

This is an international forum, I can understand some people might not be entirely fluent in English, I'm sure I make mistakes as well. Typos happen as well. Those are of course not reasons to ban someone. My personal issue with Taxus' spelling was the lack of spaces and certain letters (mostly the 'n', which is why I suggested he might have to change his keyboard. But if the mods feel he does it on purpose, well, in that case there's probably some truth in it.

There is and Irondan did explain it very well.
Of course no one will get banned for any typos or mistakes, many of us don't write in our own native language after all.

Taxus is the inventor of the word 'cleans' which is folk law in clinic history. We can't have him cleaning up his text! ;)

I thought his best was; "Richie Porte came 2th". I have to admit he puts most of it on but I do laugh at it sometimes, especially the whole "Froome, diamond in the rough" thing.

Good times.

Just read through the last 20 pages of this thread, genuinely one of the funniest things I've seen on any forum.

Highlights are-

Ray being up in arms because Taxus called him a nobody then pretending to be his own wife to try and get himself unbanned.

Pecs starting an argument with himself on a different account on the upper body thread. I think people rose a bit too much to the bait, he was just playing a character, sad he got banned tbh, seemed like he was just on the windup, nothing particularly harmful.

The post that got Taxus banned was brilliant, obviously there's a language barrier but calling Froome "froooo0oo0me" complete with zeros is a great piece of trolling.

It's genuinely compelling viewing, the best and most hurtful response to bait is just to say nothing at all, but thank god for the people that can't seem to grasp this, like going slowly past a car wreck on the motorway, you know it's wrong to look at it but you just can't turn away.

Institutional belligerence? Nailed it.

Anyone thinking otherwise needs to open their eyes.

....ok ....got my eyes wide open....and still see gobbledygook ....so, please, please explain what you think the term means and how it pertains to the situation we are discussing....

Cheers

I realise your request is most likely rhetorical, I've seen the lack of respect you hold for me. But I'll take the bait.

I am working backwards from institutionalised as a convention or norm in an organization or culture and making it a singular form of the word as a convention or norm for a poster.

You can look up belligerent if you do not know its meaning.

ie pretty consistently the poster in question jumps into threads to have a go at someone. My limited contact with this individual reinforces that perception. Well wishes to those who experienced otherwise, but I am guessing that is what he got banned for.

You are obviously right. They must have meant something like "ceaseless belligerence."

Man, you're the king of brave posts made after someone's banned...sheesh. Up until that point, I thought we had buried the hatchet...then you bury it in my back while I'm in handcuffs. Man, I thought more of you than that, guess I was wrong to do that. Never make that mistake again, I won't...

Yeah. Right.
Seeing as you just noticed this year-old post, I infer you haven't been keeping up with the forum. FYI: Any kind of vibrant back and forth that we might engage in, as we did in the past, would surely get us banned today. Good luck in this [ultra-disdainful adjective omitted] kinder, gentler forum. Seriously.

I noticed it last year, I just held the grudge for a year. Jimmy Spencer never forgets! (NASCAR joke) But I do note you seem to be expressing what I've see while reading here in the last year, that being that mild unpleasantries will get you smacked down now...it's gonna' be hard livin' for the likes of me. Oh well, there's always twitter...:)

Moved some posts that had gone off-topic, let's keep this thread for member suspension appreciation/depreciation.

Also a reminder to keep doping talk in the clinic.

The question is moot. The moderator's quest for a kinder, gentler forum killed it. Evidently none of them ever heard the term "click bait" or at least never understood its role in bringing traffic to a site. Now what is left is a few dead enders who seem to post more out of habit or an unwillingness to move on to other, more vibrant social media.

It is sort of funny in a way because I used to get PMs from people wanting me to write for them to bring traffic to their sites. Now I could not post the type of content that got those requests without getting banned.

Twitter alters its 140 char limit this coming week. Finally more than a biting one liner will be able to be expressed. Of course people who run places like this will remain too stupid to figure out they are in competition with a lot of other avenues for killing time and those other avenues continue to get more attractive than old style forums.

Are those two things mutually exclusive?
Can't you be kind and gentle and still engage in vibrant discussion?

FYI... There's no "moderators quest for a kinder, gentler forum" that I know of. If this was a direction that the previous Forum Administrators took for whatever reason, I wouldn't know about it nor would anyone else on the active moderation team. We are solely responsible to moderate the forum within the framework set forth by Immediate Media's Terms and Conditions. They own the forum, they make the rules. Our supplemental forum rules are no more than an abridged version of Immediate's Terms and conditions.

If anyone thinks that the forum is being held back from compelling, vibrant, intelligent conversation due to Terms and Conditions that every member of the forum is bound by, and agreed to, they can contact Immediate Media.

If there's any questions or comments regarding forum rules or the terms & conditions, please post your comment in the "Moderators" thread.

TIA
