god that was boring
Not the riders' fault, except that the team with most of the riders likely to make a late move was the Dutch, who had a bonanza sprinter to look after, so they managed to keep control through all the technical bits that could have allowed somebody to escape. Johansson had a go but wasn't allowed to go more than about five bike lengths before Deignan and Vos shut that down.

Dideriksen now becomes the fourth rider to win both Junior and Elite World Championship road races, after Catherine Marsal, Nicole Cooke and Marianne Vos.

Edit: and of course Catherine Marsal was there to see it too - she is Dideriksen's national team coach!!!

Also, for all the talk of it only being the Northern Europeans who were suffering in the heat, we've now had a South African and an Australian pass out and a Mexican taken to hospital - and also two Nordic nations on the final podium (!!!!)

Denmark is smashing this year!! congrats to Amalie Dideriksen
Leth and Ludwig look like they're about to cry, it's a really great young team they have, and they did a really great job today. Ludwig's only just turned 21 and she's a really interesting prospect for hillier races, and Leth is the most experienced at 24. They don't have a huge number of riders but they're really exciting for the future. Amalie has been seen as a future star for a couple of years now, and was particularly awesome in the Aviva Women's Tour as a superdom for Lizzie, and showed a technical or tricky sprint is good for her in the Boels Rentals Tour. She's a surprise winner from the size of group, but she was never a rank outsider either.

Youngest champion in 9 years, since Marta Bastianelli's win in Stuttgart.

Latest weather forecast for tomorrow between 12-18:00 (local time) is 35C and 7m/s wind from north-east.. So its gonna be hot as hell instead of earlier reports of cooler weather. Also some more wind than usual..

Exciting.

Given I just watched the whole ladies race which was less than thrilling bar the last 15 km and I'm not going to better a 50-1 winner, I might catch tomorrow on highlights.

I count 16 medallists from cold countries (northern Europe, Canada) in the individual races at this WCs out of a possible 27 so far, and 39 out of 63 if you count TTTs.

"We have not had any cases of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, as I’ve been advised by the medical team. We’ve had plenty of cases of exhaustion, plenty of cases of riders being extremely fatigued"

And what were the causes of these exhaustions, Mr. Cookson? Ermmm... The over the top ridiculously difficult parcours? The extreme length of the parcours? Probably that, not the heat...

What a moron.

Looking forward to the race, not really hopeful but with expectations low it can only surprise. Don't really fancy GBs chances as Cavs preperation has been far from ideal, and they don't have their searing heat specialist

Yes but look at the thousands of new cycling fans crowded all around the course. A few riders collapsing with heat exhaustion has to be a price worth paying.

Scandinavia is dominating these Worlds.

Scandinavians are rocking on the desert.

I...

Minus Sweden. Sweden has had 2 entries in 9 races if im not mistaken now... NOt a word in swedish media about the race either. Strange since they have Roberto Vacchi..

In Norways team, Boasson Hagen is stuck again as lead out for Kristoff, with two exceptions; if GVA or Sagan tries to go he has orders to follow them. ( http://www.procycling.no/edvald-beste-opptrekket-verden/ )

and WT riders can't ride the u23 WC anyway

I think they can nowadays, as long as they're under 23 and haven't raced in the elite WC previously. Erik Baska (Tinkoff), for example, is participating in the U23 race this year.

They can, but they can only race in one of them, U23 or ELITE; not both.

If I'm not mistaken, they cannot compete if they have started in the elite race the year before either. That's what I meant. Maybe "before" would've been a better choice of words than "previously". My bad.

Anyway, I don't know about the jersey either. If there is one, they would probably be restricted to wearing it in races that are categorised as U23 only. But I can't think of any U23 world champions that didn't get a pro contract the following season, so it doesn't really matter anyhow.

Mads Würtz wore it in the TTs this year, but only on U23 races.

Halvorsen has said he has no plans to go professional early (he is only 20). He will race atleast one year more as U23, maybe two.. (probably want to be u23 champ on homeground as well) Regardless of the offers. (Sounds great, but ill see it to believe it). So the worlds jersey will be seen in most u23 road races next year. Halvorsens goal is to be the best sprinter in the world he said and it aint time yet :D. Well he has the goal in place.

I think Halvorsen is making a good decision. Joker-Byggtorget is one of the absolute best continental teams, and in addition to sending their best riders to do U23 nations cup races, they also have a very nice race calendar, with several decent Belgian, Dutch, French and of course Norwegian UCI races. I believe the defense of his Worlds title next year in Bergen will be a huge goal for Halvorsen. To be successful, he needs to improve his climbing.
