I think after today, some will opt out of this monument altogether.

It's just pointless tbh for quite a few of the top riders. I can't see why Pog would attempt this when all that happens is the riders who get dragged up Poggio behind can then counter the group & in this case it was almost Anthony Turgis who wins.

That's exactly what I instantly thought, too, as soon as Pog failed all his first three attacks. For the strongests, they know it's too little a factor in this race.

MSR is a 20 rider lottery. You can’t guarantee victory by being the strongest and riding perfectly. That’s just how it is. In recent years, the out and out bunch sprinters have been nearly eliminated from contention, but you will always have to be lucky with the race situation to win.

Mohoric did everything right, but if Pog or VDP chase hard instantly, he doesn’t win. Pogacar will always have a chance to win, so he will probably continue giving it a go,

2 of the last 5 years we've seen 1 or 2 riders get away on the Poggio. It can and does work it's just not automatic like a harder climb would be. Part of what makes the finale so unpredictable.

I love the way that Mohoric said that the dropper post made him feel safer on the descent. This is the guy who brought the supertuck (banned on safety grounds) to everyone's attention, the guy who landed on his head coming down the Passo Godi 10 months ago, the guy who buries himself so deeply in the Poggio descent that he rides into the gutter and bunny hops at what speed?

Not the guy you want to be the arbiter of the safety of a dropper post.

To be honest i often thought of Mohorič. In the past couple of days. After all that is why he has a nationals jersey. Due to beating Pogačar on a similar terrain. But i admit i didn't believe he can survive the Poggio.
Mohoric has survived the Poggio a number of times in his career. He had 3 top11 before today. For me he was one of the outsiders for today, especially after Colbrelli pulled out.

There's a lot of talk about VdP not following, or someone else not pulling, but this will always happen in MSR unless one of the 2-3 strongest riders has a teammate. And that will always be the problem for sprinters too. Have Ewan ride this race in last year's shape and he still gets second (or even third).

Yes. It's just it's been long since you saw the biggest grand tour rider of a generation was so fired for it, and the other was still looming there in the late selection, and I'm not sure we'll see it again next year.

You could see that Wout sensed the danger in the descent, but he got sandwiched between MVDP and Pogacar when he tried to follow. Then again, I think WVA wouldn't have won a sprint today. Regardless of that, Roglic was underwhelming - he wasn't there when Wout needed him, while vice versa Wout is almost always there for Roglic.

He had to get back from being out of position numerous times, yet he still did what he could to help when he used what he had left to make a dig in the second half of Poggio. If this edition had been calmer with a full gas Poggio, Rogla would have been able to launch Van Aert's attack there. I don't think it'd make sense to expect more than that.

Like I said. Roglič is so out of position he had to do two sprints only to put himself around the fifth position, just seconds before Pogačar's first attack. Still don't know if it could have made any difference for Van Aert. Probably not.

You seriously didn't expect Roglic to climb the Poggio faster than Nizzolo?
